Hey guys, I'm coming back into the game and very excited as I have many ideas I wish to create. I hope to share my experience here with you and start a thread to keep me motivated and seek advice from you all.

Though I have been into aquariums practically all my life I still have a lot to learn. I hope my style and experiences help to create something eye catching.

So far right now I have locked down a 190. The dimensions are:
5' Lenth
2' Wide
~30" Tall

The tank is acrylic which I will attempt to buff myself. If I can't yield the results I want I will probably get it professionally buffed.

I am going for a very easy looking DIY build but should look great with some design backing every move.

The stand will be industrial style with 4x4s, 2x4s, braced together using exposed brackets. I'm not sure if I want to stain the wood redish or keep it a bit more natural.

I will not be skinning the stand and will leave the sump and plumbing exposed as part of the design. I am unsure what color to paint the pvc- black or red I suppose.

Lighting will consist of 3x par38 2x14k 1x20k led bulbs and led stripes for supplementation/moonlight. The lights will be mounted on a pvc structure I was able to design today at the hardware store. I will probably paint it black.
I got a great deal on the bulbs and I don't want any plants so these spot lights should add something unique to the freshwater world.

Aquascape is inspired by Aquarium Design Group. It's the picture of the red discus, large drift wood, and rocks.
I love the first read of the large wood and simplicity of keeping everything to a minimal- colors, shapes, etc.

I am still a new to discus but I am eyeing the striped yellow species. I plan on keeping maybe a geo or two along with a few angles, a swarm of tetras, some corys, kuhli loaches/dojo if I can find them, and a few nice plecos- i love royals.

I've already found a nice wood piece and some rocks around my house but might add some additional wood when I get to it.

ATM I am working on a nano reef and just collecting parts for the discus tank.

I could really use some help right now in determining the amount of flow I need for discus.

I know I probably need 10x turn around rate for proper filtration, but I also read discus live in slow moving water. I am using a 30gallon sump with dual biobal chambers. I am looking for a UV atm as well 24-36 watts.

The tank has a corner overflow with 1" drain and 3/4" return. I'll probably drill a few holes on top of the bracing for additional returns. I can also probably enlarge the 3/4" return to 1" and use that as another drain if I need more flow. I think 1" is only rated at 600gph right?

I'm concerned with how many gph pump I should be looking at? There are a few used external ones I am looking at, but I am adamant about finding one using low wattage and it has to be quiet.

So far the water blaster looks great, but some of the panworlds are also looking good even though I'm not sure how quiet they are. Any suggestions?

I will post some pics soon of the build. It will be a great tank in the end, but bare with me as the start will be slow.

welcome to the wonderful world of discus keeping. yellow striped? do you mean wilds? whatever you decide on, the important thing is to get good stock. usually buying from a lfs will give you stunted sickly looking fish at best. for a discus newcomer I would advise at least 4" or larger and at least 6 fish. as for the flow, discus do not like strong current. personally, I like spray bars. I have a 120 gal. wild tank with 2 cannisters and my spraybars are on each side. other setups will work but if you have too much flow the fish will hide in any slack water area they can find. as for lighting, if your going without plants then it's best to have a low light tank. your discus will love you for it and algae should'nt be a problem. looking forward to seeing how your doing.

Thanks for the reply.

I will link some pictures up to make this thread more interesting later, but yes I plan on ordering my discus somewhere as I haven't seen any discus except for 1-2 dying ones at the LFS.

For the pump I was more concerned about the turnover rate for proper filtration as I could always control the current with spraybars and valves like you said.

I will also be running a UV so I need proper flow for that too.

I think I will find something around the 1300-1500gph.

Man, I swear I'm working on the same thing, a 190g discus tank! I just picked up the tank this weekend, but mine is 60x30x24, not 60x24x30. Sounds like we got identical plans :)

Do you have a build thread! Let's motivate each other!

I have some pics for you guys.

I went to Prescott hardware in Cerritos, CA and picked up a lot of helpful items. The store is a small family owned business but the people are extremely helpful and everything is very organized, stacked up, and lined up- yes all the pvc fittings too!

I will be using the disc looking things under each 4x4 leg so it doesn't ruin my hardwood floors.

Here is the PVC pendant I designed. At first I was going to use electrical conduit but I am only using par38 bulbs. I decided however to convert the actual mounting arms to 1" to provide some added security. So it goes from 1" to 1/2". I still need one more light fixture as they only had 2 left.

No build thread yet, I plan on starting work on the stand in the next few days. I've been thinking of going the LED route also, but using these: http://www.ledwholesalers.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=684

I'm not looking to do a high-light setup, but I want to take advantage of some LED fixtures. Where did you pick up those bulbs? Really curious to see what the light spread/intensity is on those.

I'm not sure how those lights will work. $30 for 10w seems a bit pricey especially if you don't have any pictures of how they look over a tank.

The fixtures do look cool but I'm not sure if you are going for that raw look or will be using a canopy.

Here is a picture of the lights I am using. I got them used on reefcentral as they are used for corals. I got them for 3 for $145 shipped used. Brand new they are over $100 a piece.

Here's also the stand I will be building for my discus tank. It is my inspiration.

Edit:

Found some pictures of decor and hardware. :)

I'm not sure how to soak this large piece of wood haha... I'll wait until the time comes to worry about it. Looks good though and was free!

I did buy one of the little floodlamps (they sent me the wrong color though). Here's what one looks like over my 57g tank. The light output is decent. 10w, but puts out 484 lumens. Those PAR38 bulbs I linked are 400-600 lumens, so it's comparable.

What's the lumens output of those that you bought? Are they blue also? I'm trying to go for a more natural look since I'll be stocking it with wild discus
