Depends really on how far you want to take it. I have never checked into the lite or the jr as I have the other one. Check online for a forum to see some of the capabilities these things have. I believe you can get to it thru Neptune's website.

Just need a basic one that will tell me if the power is out or if the temperature is out of whack.

All systems add up the more you want

I think even for a basic system you will be luck to get change from $1000

Not sure how other systems work but most you can buy a starter pack which normally includes most you need for FW ie temp ph light controller

With mine for example the system is based around the plug bar which is the most expensive part which is a normal multi gang plug bar with USB connections each thing you add apart from lights on and off and temp needs its own interface which plugs in via USB

T1 dont know if you can get Neptune out by you but the Apex from them with all the bells and whistles with everything they sell for it would come out cheaper. Searching the saltwater forums out here you can find some good deals on used ones.

I never new those monitoring systems were avalible for normal aquarists. I have leaving my tanks for any amount of time. I always think we will lose power or my heaters or pump for my sump will fail or even worst the tank. Bust. Just yesterday I left the state for the day. I was so nervous about leaving I left my old iPhone on Skype so I could monitor it while I was gone.

Ok I'll do some more research then, I found some of those APEX on amazon for a good price and am looking to spend 500-600 on a generator. When I have a house of my own I will definitely be spending the money for a natural gas powered, automatic switch on generator.

If you can get control panel redox ph temp level and leak sensors SMS TEXT function for less than $1k that's good

The base unit just with ph temp plug bar and control panel is $400

The leak modul is $50 then each sensor is $25

The SMS module is $300
The Ethernet module is cheaper at $60

The prices may have dropped a lot since I got mine

The neptune Junior can do all, the neptune lite is a great unit as well and will handle those needs and more for you. It all comes down to you adding extras to the main unit depending what you get, the lite is nice because it comes with allot of the stuff you would want for a setup.
