Bacteria affecting new rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is great news!!

Have you done the 2nd part of treatment yet? The WC and a 2nd dose?

Glad your seeing improvement! And glad I could help. Thanks to Mike from H20 for pointing out this problem and the actions that need to be taken to fix it!

Nope only did the one dose was waiting to see if a second dose was necesary or not?
I do owe a big thanks to you, mike , nic and the others that have helped so far and hopefully I'll be able to contribute back as much as some others on the site. Oh ya not to forget Tim who had to hear me whine everyday. lol

On the 3rd day of the second dose. Things were appearing better but last night the rays started acting up and rubbing on the sides and splahing along the top again. I'm thinking I may have to either increase the dosage or decrease the intervals between dosages. I waited about 3 1/2 days after the first dose to start again. The good thing is the rays seem to eat while the meds are in the tank. Any apions on what I should do next?

So finished the third dose and the problem is still persisting. The rays seem to start scratching again just after the two day mark so I'm going to up the treament interval to every 2 days for the next couple of doses.

Hey mike I was just wondering or anyone else when you were treatng your rays did you keep treating till the white was all gone or just a week and then just let the ray heal on it's own after. What is the max time somone should keep meds in the tank?

Update....how are they doing?

I'm curious as well.....

I know you probobly mentioned it early but what is the tank temp at Scott?

Tank temp is at 90. Sorry I haven't got an update out. I've switched the way I was doing things a little. I got another 70 gallon rubbermaid stock tank and took the leos out, since they didn't seem bad and put them in just doing water changes and everything is going good for them. They're eating well and I can't see any signs of the bacteria. As for the tank with the others I had to decrease the salt in the water due to it irratating the rays with the disks that were more effected by the bacteria. I've now started to do 1/3 to 1/2 water changes every 2 days and full treatments of binox after. The rays seem to be scratching less but I think it's just too much for the one xingu and it won't make it. The way I was doing it before was water changes every 3 days and retreat but it seemed like the rays would start to scratch again after about 2 1/2 days.
It seems like I've been medicating forever and don't know if the bacteria is all gone and they just need to heal or I should just keep going. All there appetites have faded but most are still eating. Does anyone know how long you can medicate for before it is harmful to the rays?

This doesn't sound good at all. Sounds like we celebrated early.

I'd be monitoring the filter very closely..... Ammonia/Nitrite make sure you that there's still planty of bio to handle the spikes.... I know there is an effect on your bio, however I don't know if that effect is heightened by prolonged use of the med.

IF I remember correctly Binox only treats one of the gram forms of bacteria (thinking gram negative) Maybe it's time to start trying to track down a med that will knock out the other form...... (Gram positive)

I'm NOT an expert...... So it would be really nice if one of the experts could chime in.

I would definetly be trying to get VERY good pics that show the symptoms. IF no one over here has answers then maybe it's time to start asking the guys across seas..... We all know there are some VERY knowledgable fellas over there.
