Bacteria affecting new rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wonder if they need a break from the meds. I treated one of my pups for an apparent
eye/eyes bacteria, it was so white you could not even see its pupils. With in
three days it was 90% gone I did a water change and never treated again. The rest
cleared on its own. Not the same thing I know, just an example.

Also, are you barebottom? If I remember Mike said all substrate should be removed
as the meds won't kill the bacteria within the substrate. I did not read back through
the prior post so wasn't sure about your setup.
I know on the bottle it states second dose may be added in four days.

Well I think I made a mistake. I did a 1/3 waterchange yesterday after posting and did not redose the meds thinking everything may be healed and to try to get things back to normal. Rays started scratching and twitching more and more. I fed twice since then and they ate less each time. I have no idea how this is on the bio side of my filtration I can only hope it is not to severe. I think my best bet is back to waterchanges and dosing every one or two days until I can see no more white around the edges. I have to keep the salt down to 2 pounds per 100 gallons due to it highly aggrivating the rays with the really white edges and it also looks like it burns the edge a bit since it becomes red in places. I've got a kilo of nitrofurazone coming in from the Jehmco so hopefully customs has no problem with that. It appears the meds help, I don't know if it's a cure or a patch but for now I guess I'll keep patching and hope it cures. Your right about looking into other alternatives I think DB.

I was thinking the same as you with a break from the meds but I guess that won't work.
I do have a barebottom tank and I can see why mike wanted me to remove the gravel at the start. With a constant need to scratch and a bad need, almost unbearable to watch them in such agony they would have rubbed all there skin off. Even with no substrate they find a way to rub there skin off in places.

Maybe try Maracyn/Maracyn2 combo. That will cover ALL bacteria..... Gram negative AND gram positive.

Nitrofurazone IS the active ingrediaent in Binox. So if Binox didn't do it Nitrofurazone won't either.

Man this sucks.

I had the nitrofurazone on order just to make sure I had some. But I think it might be a good idea to switch over to another med. I won't be able to get any for a few days ( I have to drive a few hours to get it ) so I'll continue on with the binox until then. At least it's positive to hear other poples success.

i will always swear by maracyn and maracyn2...... might be expensive but have never failed me

Prime. What type where you using?

I use Tap Water Conditioner because of heavy metals, I have well water, but that is beside the point. The Sulfites in prime may be what is irritating the rays. Not saying that they are not afflicted by a bacterial infection, but the sulfites can make they itchy at the exposed skin.
