Bacu Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a large granulated catfish(pterdoras granulosus) at about 28 inches. My experience with my fish it that they do not like warm temperatures and mine would barely eat at a temp of 77 degrees. What I found out when one of my heaters gave out is that he thrives at 73- 74 degrees though. Something for those to try if they're having trouble getting them settled in. I didn't expect a few degrees to make difference but it is night and day for my fish. Be careful though, other big cats, especially rtc, prefer it a bit warmer imo.

That is something I will have to keep my eye on. With my bass I am keeping my water at 81. I’ll observe him over the next couple days and see how it goes. Since I have gotten home from dinner he seems to like to hide behind the heater. Could this burn him? I figure if it was hurting him he would move but what if he does it while it is on. It is a 300 watt and is on pretty frequently. I would also love to see a pic of yours, I would really love to see what I can expect him to look like in the future.

Honestly, I don't think many fish are smart enough to move if they're getting burned lol. A heater guard would be the safest. even a piece of pvc with some slits cut into it would work. I don't have any good pics since he is in a pond but I'll see what I can do. In the mean time, this is a pic from the previous owner. He was still 2 ft or so at that point. Yep, your cute little baby will grow into this ugly monster lol. It may look different but it is the same species. Ignore the butt-kicker photo bombing the pics.

Also, mine is not what I would consider personable but he will eat from my hand, provided my hand is in front of his mouth. It is by no means an aggressive feeder...it just floats around and sucks up food and it is not particularly quick about it either. Overall its an interesting cat that not too many people have at a large size, atleast from what I've seen and heard. My best advice if troubles continue is to lower the temp. They can also develop cloudy eyes very quickly at high temps, atleast according to the internet but I didn't wish to prove it true.

Lastly, no it doesn't have a tumor, it is just fat lol. Seriously though, they have a very unique shape when they get larger which will be evident if I can ever get the pic I took off my phone.

That is a beast, I can’t wait. Thanks for sharing the pics, they are few and far between online. Also thanks for the heads up on the temps I’ll keep my eye out. I am afraid to turn it down while the bass are small but when they grow a bit I’ll lower it. I have also just developed a new problem of feeding. The bit of perch had not been eaten so I tried moving it around and it fell off the ledge. I scooped it out and noticed my aero interested so I tried a hand feeding. He took it out 3 times and spit it out. I tried again with tilapia and he took it 2x eating both pieces. Now whenever I put my hand in the tank there he is begging like my dogs. Hopefully he won’t swipe it from my bacu, he is hard enough to feed as it is.

Not a problem. I've been meaning to post up some pics of all my cats for a while now. I'll do my best to get some new full body shots so you can see better. It's really hard to tell much from the two I posted. I have some other cool ones to share including a big Niger and a large very blue/grey/silver channel cat.

I would stick with what you're doing for the bass but when they grow a bit I'd drop it to say 76 and see how it works. It shouldn't hurt anything in the least.

Lastly, I don't know exactly how old mine is but I'm guessing at least four at the minimum although it could be much older. Either way, they don't grow particularly quickly, which you already know.

Ya, I feel like it will take a bit to grow him out which isn’t necessarily a bad thing w/ a cat that can grow 3ft+. I am going to just keep trying to get him food and have him eat while he will. I put another piece of perch touching his mouth and 20 min later he turned around. I wonder what it is about this fish he and the aero won’t eat. I’ll try tilapia again tomorrow and see how it works out. It just seems strange that both won’t eat it but ate tilapia. I wonder if it could have anything to do with the skin that is on the perch.

Has he not got burned so far? Yes it will burn him. No, fish don't feel the burn, it would appear from many keeper reports I came across. It is always the best, if not to say essential, to make sure no fish can use the heater for hiding, perching, and anything else.

I found suction cups to attach them to the side so they can’t hide behind them. I don’t think he has been burned yet but he doesn’t hide there anymore. He has found a ledge on the driftwood and pretty much stays there during the day. Last night he was super active swimming around everywhere while I watched. There were a few pieces of food on the ground that I am assuming he ate overnight so I may have to just drop food in at night for awhile until he is comfortable eating during the day. Now I just have to get these bass eating and grow out my bichir and dat I’m getting today and the tank will be full.
Current inhabitants:
4 kelberi pbass
1 silver arowana
1 granulated
Future inhabitants already acquired:
1 delhezi
1 indo dat getting this afternoon
Possible future inhabitants, not getting them all but maybe some in order of how bad I want them.
1 endli bichir (almost a definite I just have to find one)
1 ornate bichir (if I can find one at a good price, I found a 6 in for 40 and regret not getting him.)
1 clown knife
1 oscar
2-3 more dats I would grow out to sell later

mine is eating like crazy and I am sure has grown a bit. Keeping it at 82 currently along with a wels, vulture, syno, and raphael. It is quite an interesting sight to see when I drop pellets or shrimp in their tank lol. They scramble to scoop it up pretty good. He keeps his territory by biting and shoving the wels out of his spot when it tries to take over lol.

I can’t wait for mine to get like that for feeding. Do you feed while the tank is dark or lit? I am sure feeding will also get more aggressive once I can get these bass feeding, a couple are mouthing pellets but no takers. On a side note my dad went out to get the dat and it had ich. At least the guy didn’t sell me a sick fish but it is a bummer I couldn’t get him today. My dad wouldn’t have noticed the difference so it is good to know Scott from The fish house affiliated w/ bluegrass aquatics is a legit guy to deal with. I have bought several from him including this cat.
