I woke up this morning to find out that the female's fins are all torn. I moved her to another container, and now, I need advice on what to do now. Should I return the male, and get another pair? It seemed like all of the other convicts were much smaller, about 2". Thanks again for your input.

Well, I'm going to leave her alone for a long time, until she has fully recovered. Should I go try to get a 2" pair? Maybe if they isn't such a size difference, the male won't harrass her so much.

get a group and let 'em do their thing. One should be all black/white, and one should be black/white with orange. You're sure you have a pair? One will have orange (The female)

With convicts, size is one thing that does not matter lol

i agree with santoury id get lke a group of 6 convicts 3 males and 3 females if u now how to sex them.. and whats the contaner the female is in?

Container! :WTF:

What's the tank size?

They are cichlids, of course there's going to be a little aggression between the pair. Returning one male for another will not solve the problem. I take it the male is larger than the female, provide adequate hiding places for her. Failing this, add another female (Not another male.) and let him choose. Hell, they cost nothing add four and you'll get your pair.

The containers about 8g, but it's filtered, and with a heater.

The tank size I was trying to breed them is only 10 gallons. I know bigger is better, but my parents won't get me any more fish tanks at all :irked:
I know that it was a male and a female. There are 2 rocks, with holes in them, on each side of the tank. I don't think I can fit much more than 2 convicts, though. So should I get another female? I don't want to keep risking fish.

So, one is black and white, the other has orange? Just to confirm.

You can get 4 in there - or 6 - one or two may get killed, but there will be a pair in no time.

They ar both black with stripes. The female has a lot of orange on the belly, and the male is beginning to grow a knuckle hump.

So I guess the verdict is this: Return the male, and get 4 little convicts? How many males, how many females?

no, keep what you have now - add 4 more little ones - I'd say 3 females and another male.
