If I were in your shoes I'd find somthing my brother enjoyed as a hobby of equal value and bust it up - especially if he's not willing to pay for the fish ;)

Starting a war is probably a bad idea. Then he'll have a reason to kill your other fish too.

Hmmm....that does suck. Airstones should not matter though if you have adequate filtration. Sorry for your loss whatever caused it.

It does matter as it the only thing breaking the surface.

Filtration? Eheim 2217 and 2 fluval 4's on a lightly stocked 120gallon.

Sounds like plenty of filtration. Too bad they died. I wonder what killed them? Surface breaking simply does not add very much oxygen content to a tank. It agitates the water surface helps only a little. In smaller tanks with low filtration it can make a small difference. With a tank as large as yours with that much filtration there is no way removing airstones alone killed them. I am not trying to be a jerk, I am just suggesting that you might have had something else aside from airstone removal occur that killed your fish.
