Ball head python advice?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'll second the posts above about giving your snake a period of time to acclimate any time you change its cage or cage furnishings.

I give a WEEK at MINIMUM with NO HANDLING whatsoever. After a week of settling in, I'll offer food. If they refuse, they get another week.

New keepers often don't have their setups right, which causes stress, and then compound the problem by handling the snake too much too soon.

Also - quit offering pinky mice. There's nothing to them nutritionally, they may not be large enough to illicit a feeding response from the snake, and a hatchling ball python can EASILY consume a small adult mouse as their FIRST meal after hatching.

Hope that helps.

Thanks alot guys i wasn't giving a week i was going on the 3 day rule. And i thought that about pinky mice but some people at the pet store said otherwise. i will go back to adult mice or pinky rats. I won't handle him for the next little bit. I just changed his housing to attempt a more comfortable environment. More like what i have seen on how to build a python cage. So you will be hearing back one week from now, thanks again.

Ok so i will post pics in about 2 hours. And i am going to go buy a pinky rat, and a live either hopper or adult mouse. I am going to attempt feeding the rat first if he takes i'll give the mouse away. i want to avoid live feeding if at all possible. Secondly my GF really really wants one, but her rents are unwilling to let her keep one. So if she were to get a female around the same size as mine could they co exist in one aquarium?

No. It is not recommended to keep more than 1 BP per enclosure. It can cause serious stress.

x3.
It will only further complicate things as a beginner. If you ever were to plan this, I would hope it would be when you are far more experienced and even then, it's still a better idea to keep seperate.

Worry about getting your snake habitat correct and it eating first.

Very true. It is not me that really wants another i have my hands fairly full at the moment with pets. Got my family dog, 30 gallon cichlid tank, 75 gallon oddball tank overstocked for the moment with a softshell turtle and a gar. (In about a year i figure it will out grow maybe a little more, then i shall invest in a far bigger tank) Tarantula (baby) and my ball python(also baby). Constantly learning and adjusting everything.
But some good news!! I bought a small adult mouse today (alive, didn't want to but was worried about the eating, bit of a panic move) Put my snake and it in a box, he was scared of the mouse......
well i left the mouse in his ten gallon for a bit came back and bam! one fat snake and lacking a mouse, i am so very happy to have him eating :)
post of the set up coming momentarily
