Ball head python advice?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are you using sand as substrate? If so, I would recommend switching that out as soon as possible. It doesn't hold humidity, harbors bacteria, and can cause impaction if swallowed.

I would also get 2 identical hides, 1 on each side that way the snake doesn't have to choose between being the right temperature and feeling secure. You have a hot side and a cool side right?

The more comfortable you make your BP, the better he will eat. Most BP's will not eat consistantly when stressed.

Sorry its not sand, it is paper towel. I would never use sand for a python. And i know the hides are cheezy (why they left my fishtank) but i didn't think about making him choose before. Thanks i will invest in some more pots today and take out the skull and the castle. as for the hot cold side, yes, i have a heat pad under the skull side and i have a lamp middle but closer to the skull. thanks again guys

Just a tip for you, that always works for me when I have a new addition to my collection that is slow to start eating for me...

I take sheets of newsprint, cumple them into balls (like you'd do before you throw into the trash can), and fill the floor of the cage until no portion of the floor of the tank is visible looking from above.

What this does is give them a huge sense of security in the cage, and they'll feel more apt to roam around in secrecy and become comfortable with their enclosure.

Once they start eating, over a period of weeks I begin to thin out the amount of balled up newspaper until the enclosure is back to normal. They don't notice and are usually fully acclimated by the time this is over.

Just a tip that has worked for me in the past.....
