Ball Python Breeding?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Based on the age of your current ball python, I'd say that you could hold off on getting a male until at least next year since it's better to wait until a female is two to three years old and of sufficient weight before attempting to breed her. You can usually find proven breeder males for pretty cheap and don't bother getting any normal males since you'll just be wasting your money. Also, it's always a good idea to grow out your own females in order to save some money and be assured of their health.

Now exactly how many female and mall ball pythons do you want to have at this point in time? I have a few suggestions for both the quantity department and the morph department, but I'd like to see what your goal is for this year and how much you are willing to spend.

Use the website that muffywrx suggested; it works great and can show you what you'd be looking at for possible offspring from pretty much any pairing.

Oh the ball that i have now is actually a male and is about a year old. At the show next weekend my goal is to get a baby male spider for next year. An adult female norm to try and breed this november, and a baby female pastel. The pastel will be bred with the spider when old enough. Ive been looking around at the vendors who are gonna be there and have found the female norm and male spider that im gonna be getting. If i find a pastel i like or even a super pastel then ill get her. And hopefully i get the 3 1/2 foot norm some guy is giving me.

So that would total 5 by the end of the month.
But my neighbor has a pair of norms that are a few years old. Female is 4 foot male is 3 1/2 and she is asking 150 for them. Dont know if its worth it or not but thats something i got to think about.

This year all im lookingf at doing is breeding the norms since this is my first time and if im succesfull ill pick up more snakes next summer.

It's pretty easy ... if you have any questions, let me know. Also, the people over at ball-pythons.net are pretty great.

PS the length means nothing. It matters what they weigh in grams.

That seems a bit steep to me for a pair of what I'm guessing are unproven normals.

x2.

I echo that 150 seems steep for a nonproven pair. Is he 100% sure of the sex? I was sold a female and male years ago, and was promised they were female and male. They turned out to be two males.

Yeah but more than likely a 3 1/2 foot long ball that is fat and healty is gonna be way over the min. size for breeding.

Yeah there male and female. they were gonna try and breed them, but one day her husband left her and left the snakes and she never wanted to breed them. But the 150 is for there entire enclosure as well. Not saying id use it but i dont think shell sell me just the snakes. Oh well.

Does anyone know of a thermosat that can monitor and control temp in 4+ tanks. My plan is to set them up in the garage. Im in south florida so around november the temp should drop to the 70s and i wont need to produce alot of heat so im only using heat pads. Then ill place a 4 foot florescent over the thanks and have that on a timer. Any thoughts?

How are you sure that the 3 1/2 foot ball python is fat and happy? If you have seen pics, okay, but you need to make sure that the female is at least of size, and this has nothing to do with length. It is best for her to be at least 1500g and to buy from someone who doesn't know that probably hasn't given them the best care.

Most thermostats are fine, some have 3 plug ins or so, but you can always plug in an extension cord as long as all heating units are the same and you don't exceed the wattage limit.

Tanks are not ideal enclosures however. But you may have used that word loosely as I seem to remember you mentioning a rack system?

Did you say 150? As in 150gallon tank? Are you kidding me? This lady is keeping them together in a 150 gallon tank? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard and I hope I read that wrong.
EDIT: Pretty sure I read that wrong and you were talking about money, but I sure hope they were not housed together.

Well, there are two contributing factors when choosing a thermostat: price and being able to minimize temperature fluctuations. A good on/off thermostat will run you around $30 but will not keep the temperature as stable as a good proportional thermostat which will run you around $100+. I'd say that a Hydrofarm thermostat would work nicely if you want to save money and get an on/off thermostat, but if you want to go with a proportional thermostat then go big with a Helix DBS-1000, which is considered by many to be the best one out there.

ball-pythons.net is a great site. Ton of really really good breeders and awesome people. Im Ballsunlimited on there. As for t stats i use the herpstat and johnson. Both work very well and have never had a problem with any of them. I would steer clear of the cheap ones there are a ton of horror stories with them

Ahaha. You are the guy that loves posting pics of himself ;D

I suggest the VE200, which is proportional and only about 120-150$. Just like 20$ more than the VE100 on/off one.
