ball pythons or corn snakes

there are quite a few species of smaller pythons. children's, spotted, some carpets dont get much bigger than balls.
i'm not too sure about prices these days.
those smaller pythons are quite good starter snakes as well - children's/spotted, etc
 
ive heard of a friend of a friend of a friend that apparently a black mamba is a good starting snake.

For ease of care it's 100% corn (or king). If you decide to go with a BP you might have feeding issues, if at all possible go with a captive bred one.

My first snake was a retic, which went surprisingly well...not my first herp though, I'd kept many lizards and turtles including large species.
 
I would say the corns they will be the cheapest and easiest especially since the balls wont eat for extended periods.
