That's the number 1 reason they die. Filter feeders are not easy to care for.Well I've discovered the problem was he wasn't getting enough food so when I get a tank upgrade I will do things differently
When I was young I had a 55g that I had 3 dragon gobies and a few bamboo shrimp. I had to mix fry food with water and slowly over a couple hours drip it in the tank. Both are filter feeders. It was a pain but cool at the same time. Saltwater can be a pain like that too but I had more knowledge and money and equipment. That's the number 1 reason they die. Dragon gobies filter feed?! I always thought of them like bichirs. When I was young I had a 55g that I had 3 dragon gobies and a few bamboo shrimp. Technically no...but yes at the same time. They look fearsome and like a predator but actually they use their teeth to scrape algae off rocks. They sift sand to find alot of their food in the wild. Feeding larger stuff is not advisable as it can get stuck in their pretty small throats. I'd watch mine swim up into the current while feeding the tank gulping in bits of food. They can eat small pellets and stuff like that. They do better in brackish water but if water is hard enough with a higher pH they seem to do just fine without salt. I don't remember how long I had that tank set up probably 5 years or so. I guess they live up to 10 years. My largest one was about 10 or 12". I had 3 in a 55 and they'd fight a little from time to time with each other, never bothered anything else in the tank. I had guppies in with them (fry may have been eaten) and a few bamboo shrimp.Dragon gobies filter feed?! I always thought of them like bichirs.
+1 on the salt filter feeders being annoying. At least tanks are built for them to always have enough in salt, not really something you consider when setting up fresh.
