I bet you guys see this all the time, especially the people who work in fish stores, people buying fish that should not have been sold in the fish stores in the first place.

When I was working in a fish store for over six months some of our best sellers were Oscar Cichlids, Iridescent Sharks (Pangasius hypophthalmus), TSN, and Red Pacus. The sad thing about this less then 5% of those people had a tank larger then 55 gallon, most even looked at a 55 gallon as a freakishly large tank. We even had a few RTC who were all sold into some tiny tank.

Do you guys think that there are certain fish that should not be allowed to be sold in fish stores, not necessarily illegal, just not allowed to be sold in regular fish stores?

yes the majority of all fish

people come into my store all the time and say can i order a shark?
what size of tank do you have?
a 55
well even the smallest shark get like 4 feet.
well when it gets that big we will get another tank for it

YEAH RIGHT!!!

not all cichlids get that huge.

No, but some buyers should be. If you start banning these fish for some they will end up banned for all and then the next step is other fish and pets, no beuracracy willingly limits power or ever goes away.

:iagree:

What I see at my LFS is that people buy little fish and when they get too big they bring them back and trade them for cedit. I've got some neat cichlids that way

at a lfs here i saw a spiny puffer saltwater
that was the size of a shoe box no BS
it sat there for like half a year
and the last time i went i asked about it
and the guy told me it died from being in such a small tank
i think it was like a 29 gal. tank
:swear: :headshake

What can you do ? From a business point of view these fish are immensely popular
and generate a lot of income than the less common fish. The turnover rates for these fish are fast.. they could empty out a tank of oscars in a few weeks whereas a Tank full of Rams could be there for months and not sell out.

Best way is to educate hobbyists.. as soon as they understand what potential and max size is, they will be able to make informed choices.
