banjo catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Would get hundreds of these at work. I purely hate them specifically cause of the pain the cause when a big one stinks hell out if ya. One of the worst!

Nice mopani wood. It should tan the water nicely. I didn't realize there was a difference in activity between the two types. Ironically I never see the non eel tails in shops around here. The eel tails i always have on order from my lfs, because they usually are on the import list but not available. They seem to come in around November each year. Perhaps when the water is low enough to catch them? I like your setup better with the mopani and the additional plants.

Lamb: I've never been stung by these before. Do you mean pinched by the pectorals? I didn't even realize this can happen. I usually scoop them by hand to one side of the tank for siphoning(I've smashed one before, thus the move) and never stung yet. If you have a picture, or better yet a vid of the hundreds of banjos that would be awesome. If their eel tail I'd be intrested in more. 😀

Thanks Cali ... I like the mopani wood as well

I never knew if there was a difference of not, it's just an observation I've had from the many posts we've shared amongst us here.

Lamb: Like Cali ... I'm confused about the "stung" comment as well. Only once when over handling one of my non eel-tail Banjo's have they pinched me with their pectorals. It didn't hurt or anything ... just felt ... different. Caught me off guard and I immediately dropped it back in the tank. Hasn't happened since.
Hundreds of Banjo's swimming together would be a cool video.

I don't know about "stung" but I do know the eel tails have some sharp teeth and will bite. Even break skin if your fingers are dangling in front of their mouths.

Wow ... Is this from personal experience? I've never been bit, just pinched by the pectorals the one time.

Wow at the rate I'm going, I may make it impossible to see my Banjo's.

Things are improving tank wise for them. Switched out the Madagascar Lace with another one, and finally managed to find some Indian Almond Leaves for the tank. Added the leaves yesterday (Sunday), and they're starting to sink now. Nice large leaves, after they sink I may break them in half still. Between the driftwood and IAL, I've noticed the water is getting more tannis in it. Plus 2 of the non eel-tailed Banjo's finally became visible again today :) I see the 2 eel-tail Banjo's everyday, but the other ones have been very scarce since the plant cover disappeared.

Nice Mr mom. I'd like to see those leaves when they settle. Your like me, always fiddling with the tank to keep things interesting.

I received a cheesy set of macro lens for my iphone and thought I'd share some head shots.

Yep Cali ... always fiddling, hopefully for the better each time.
By the way ... nice head shots, I especially like the color of the second one.
The leaves settled to the bottom and I ended up cutting each leaf into 3, after all it's only a 30G and the leaves are a good size.
No pics yet, as I'm still fiddling. With the leaves already settled, I added a few more yesterday during a WC. One thing I've noticed with the addition of the IAL, the algae eating shrimp in the tank have taken on a red tinge to their bodies. I find them more striking to look at now.

Well its been a bit ... and I've made some minor changes to the tank during this time.

Around June 10th, I removed 1 piece of driftwood from the center of the tank and moved the larger sword plant a little further back, this allowed for more space on the bottom for the Almond Leaves ... found cutting them into 3's, they disintegrated too quickly. As well I was missing the shade the Java Moss had provided before, so got to brainstorming and my son and I thought we'd add a piece of Hornwort to the tank, woven into the wood.

We thought it showed potential, so as it grew we kept weaving it further through the wood. Well at the end of the month (forgot to take pics) we went away for a few days. Tank had no light and all the needles fell off the Hornwort (big mess).

But we liked the way it was beginning to look, so lesson learned. I went and got a timer for those times we are away and we added another little strip of Hornwort to begin again. (Left what was remaining of the previous one attached, it's helped tie in new growth)

Tried out the timer this past weekend, as we were gone for 6 days, and this is what I came home to...

No lost needles this time :)

I do like the way this tank has gone appearance wise, just sightings of my Banjo's have become less and less frequent. They obviously love the new cover.

I had removed 15 of the White Clouds at the end of June (feeders for another tank), obviously they are breeding (I've seen the odd smaller one during this time ... Banjo's are eating most of them) as I'm back over 30 again. I'm guessing its a size thing, because the Banjo's seem to be eating only the smaller White Clouds, once they reach adult size they seem to be left alone. So in a way it's like a "quasi" ecosystem. Plus to this day nothing has harmed the Algae Eating Shrimp I have in there.
