banjo catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That pretty neat that they are actively hunting. I think my guys are overfed because they usually just loaf around. There are 3 Amano shrimp in their tank now the last few months with no problem. Perhaps some larger/deeper bodied tetras, diamond, phantoms or serape?

One of my favorite fish. When I was a kid I had a tank full of predators. Arro's, oscars, a TSN, etc.

My little banjo survived 5-6 years staying buried out of sight.

I think I'm re-doing my tank soon and going with:

3-4 Geo Redhead Tapajos
1 L200 Pleco
and I'm going to try my hand at an eel tail banjo

Sweet chaca chaca! He never went for the banjo catfish? Big size difference. I haven't seen chaca around here for a long time.

No he doesnt bother the banjo at all, they get along just fine. Only problem i have is over the last couple months the chaca has starting eating the worms that are for the banjo cat. He has eaten feeders bigger than the banjo but never one bothered him.

I've kept different catfish together with a large difference in size. Most of the time it seems like they know not to devour their own kind. I've even seen them become "buddies" the smaller of the two following the larger around everywhere. Nestling underneath.

That chaca is a beast!!! How long have you had it? Would love to get my hands on another! Had a small one a while back. The eel tail at the LFS didn't look that great. Trying to reach the surface continuously like that is not normal behavior

Good luck!!!

Ive had the chaca for a year and a half maybe 2 years,i had 2 but one was killed by another fish. I would suspect that the severums that kept nipping his tail everytime when rested at the bottom would be one reason why the banjo at the store was shooting for the top lol, either way hes long gone.

This is the first thing i thought. Any of you guys have experience with the Eeltails?

I've only stumbled on the 2 Eeltails so far ... otherwise my other 4 Banjo's are just normal Banjo's. But Calichai and Warrendafish have a few Eeltails in their tanks.

Thanks for sharing your Chaca and Banjo, SharptoothBass. I do like that Chaca, too bad the other didn't make it. From what I've read on them, I'll have one some day. It's too bad that Eeltail was getting harassed (and stressed) and too bad I wasn't closer or I'd have taken it home .... got a few empty tanks around here still.

It was a nice surprise seeing them hunting ... and its opened up some other ideas for this tank.
I know my Banjo's are overfed (just by looking at the snails in that tank) and they still went on the hunt. Plus this was a complete first seeing them harm anything they've been housed with. My original 2 spent almost a year with 3 Amano shrimp (plus other fish) with never a problem (until I cooked the shrimp oops) ... and I've had (store labeled) 8 or 9 Algae Eating Shrimp in this tank since fall. I watched the Banjo's just swim past the shrimp many a time, as well I've watched the shrimp walk across the Banjo's.

We're down to just 3 Cardinals now ... but then I'm gonna throw some White Mountain Minnows in with the Banjo's.
