Bare Bottom Equals Better/Worse?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
barebottom is ok if you got a good filter. I went barebottom on 38 and since their was no gravel to trap the debris it was all sucked through the filter and got real dirty real quick.

I feel the same way about bare bottom tanks that I do about cinder block stands...A battered primer gray Mustang with the right set up can turn in just as fast a time in the quarter mile as show piece but who'd want to drive it?

To me...the setting itself is just as importiant as the fish.

You might as well put slate rock or a slab of rock as the bottom of the tank... the light reflection might be affecting the paleness.

I know that some species of fish kept in bait wells tend to go pale after a few minutes.

That's why my tanks are half bare bottom... I don't want to go either way :D

u mean ur just cheap to cover it all the way! hahaha :p j/k

personally i dont like how the fish acts or interact with each other on barebottom tanks, they seem so unease all the time.

gravel helps house good bacteria... if your pumps were to shut off, it would kill the fish quicker in a BB tank... (not by much)

i just had to say ...pacu mom, i have kept black pacu before , i unfortunately got rid of them because my 220 was just a little on the small size for the monsters, but i know what you mean , they get pale when they sleep or after the lights have been on too long. you fish look awesome though, i miss mine:(

bare bottom never affected my fish or rays color.... I would check water quality if your fish are pale.... but too answer your question it doesn't matter if you have substraight or not if there is no poop in the tank that's a good thing

my water params are fine. my gar used to be almost black and since i have taken out the substrate his color is very dull and silvery. i am def. going back to gravel.

Barebottom > Substrate

Depends on the fish your keeping, and the functionality of the tank.

For Rays, and other large Bio-load tanks, I believe it's an extreme advantage.

For Showtanks and something more Aesthetic, sand or gravel has it's benefits.

I've tried bare bottom tanks, but my fishes were more comfortable w/ a substrate in the tank. But it was easy to clean, because you can see the waste on the bottom.
