Bare Bottom or gravel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
don't really like bb as it isnt really natural, which is what i like. Plus I thought gravel, or substrate of any kind is needed for bacteria. Plus I like the fact the fish can eat off it etc. So i chose gravel over bb

but if your filter has sufficient bacteria then isnt the substrate there just for appearance

try sand

because it keeps debre and dirt and everything on top

so it still looks good and you don't have to worry about things getting trapped

ive had sand in my tank

whenever i would gravel vac during a water change gas bubble would come up when i distrubed it.

tells me that anaerobic activity is taking place.

I use crushed coral and notice a LOT more water stability with it than either gravil or bare bottom tanks. Bare concrete floors in you house might well be a lot simpler to clean but it certianly looks like hell... Have you ever taken a close look at the bottom of a lake or river?

I like gravel more, it makes the tank seem a lot more attractive and natural IMO. But you need to have only a shallow amount, otherwise too much waste will pile up.

shallow gravel, if the fish likes bare bottom then they can wiggle themselves a bare bottom spot to chill.
if you're interested in what the fish like, then let them choose. go half gravel, half bb and just observe. but if you're more interested in aesthetics and ease of maintenance, then disregard everything i said.

if you keep the gravel no deeper than 1-2inch then it doesnt get dirty

i use a gravel cleaner all the time but as my rays are turning it over all the time it is never dirty the gravel cleaner is just to flattern the gravel back out

i dont see how anyone can like a bare bootom tank in their living room it makes the tank look like a shop

at the end of the day its up to you and all depends on what fish you keep

rays need substrate
