Bare Bottom Vs. Sand...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have always thought sand was better. My cousin had a ray that died he was told that it was because he had gravel as substrate. He replaced the gravel with sand and the next ray did fine he kept it several years.

After starting my own thred on this i have decided to go with red flint sand for my 240 for the rays.

how deep of a sand bed are you guys useing tho? @2" ? or not even?

I got mine in 40gallon breeder with tiny grain of gravel it look sort of like sand in some ways. People should be carefull of what type of sand they use the ones like they use on beaches or masonaire sand has a cutting/abbration affect to bare skin keep that in mind. But i think it is Best for the stingrays be on bare bottoms or any bottom dewelling fishes.

all the fishes i every own dig up the gravel or sand to the bottom of my tanks an get rid and keep all of all the substrate away from them.

"the one who said, i put sand on bare bottom and my sting ray ran for it?

It's because it just want a hiding spot. all fish like hiding spots.

After putting a ray in my 240 today it seems as if the sand is more of a annoyance to them rather then a shelter. thinking of removing the sand now:irked:

i dont like the way that sand sticks to the rays disk so i find a small smooth pebble gravel to be better but any substrate is better than none in a ray tank

I was thinking the same thing, i hate the look of a BB tank so i was thinking of a small pebble type supstrate, but ya the sand is everyware! looks like a swimming land mass of sand at times. i dont like that. and not sure if the ray does either, :irked:

I have about 1.5", only because my ray enjoys digging in it all day long. For cleaning purpose, the less the better.:perv:
