Bare Tanks for Silver Arowana?

for maintenance purposes. in the end, when you already have got a monster silver and most probably with monster tank mates, you don't wanna disturb them by stirring the substrate and try to siphon the dirt off.

Back on topic......

I keep bare bottom tanks for the ease of cleaning as well as swimming room for fish. No obstacles to lose scales on and IMO it showcases your stock rather than useless deco.

Your right and no threads should ever evolve into discussions on other things, right? No matter if information presented is correct or not

So since all reasons for keeping a bare bottom tank have now been answered this thread can now go dormant, until some grave digging newbie has the urge to tell everybody he is running a bare bottom tank.



BTW...Not likely other fish swimming below an arowana is the cause for DE.

Back to topic: OK, I accept the point of ease of maintenance (cleaning/siphoning the debris might disturb the Aro.)

While I am definitely not keeping any "deco" stuff, I am still very much considering a background poster (just a solid black or dark blue). I wonder if I can also put a solid color poster on the floor to make it look slightly less boring than a bare-bottom tank?

I don't see a reason why not. It's not a right or wrong with having a bare-bottom tank or not, it's your preference for your fish's environment! All fish naturally would like to be in planted-tank environment, but I'm lazy so I just have fake decor background and a thin layer of gravel on the bottom of my tank.

How do you know though? What if they actually hate the plants becuase they get in the way?

Nobody's ganging up on the noobs.

Yes, Bubble boy is a new to the forum and maybe he has other info regrading the matter on which I asked for him to expand upon. I can only find this out by questioning him, so no need to get defensive.

If I had to guess, I would say having a bare-bottom tank might (according to some theories) actually cause DE in Silver Aros.

And yes, I agree with SMPAGE, bare-tanks are really boring.

There are a few people who believe this to be true, the thinking is that the arowana can see it's own reflection in the bottom glass.

Yes, barebottom tanks are boring, also IME they require too much attention to detail to keep them looking clean.
