What is the chance that filling the 'voids' will actually do more harm than good? I think I read somwehere that new silicone doesn't adhear well to cured silicone.

That seems to be the age old debate, new-to-old silicone. The only actual tests I've heard of were done by Chompers, and he showed they do adhere well... And as far as harm, I really don't think it will hurt anything, the top receives the least amount of pressure and the brace will really keep the corner together anyway.

yyeahh, about that... not so much. lol

Unfortunately life has been a little too busy with the holidays and work, but I should be getting back to it in a few weekends.

Thanks for checking tho, its a nice boost to stop whining about being busy and get to work on the things that matter... tanks and fish! My P. joselimaianus is gonna need the room real soon.

So how important is the thickness of the inner bead?

I was just looking at the tank last night and cleaning off some of the excess silicone, and my inner bead doesn't seem real beefy. I only used my finger to smooth it out, so its not the thickest bead in the world. I wouldn't be too concerned but its "relatively" tall (24").

Also, I'm not that impressed with the "square-ness" of my work. The top of one side leans slightly inward (about a 1/16") and the other sits a little high (I guess some silicone got under it and the glass wasn't heavy enough to push it out)...

Do I need to do ANOTHER complete tear down? I will if I have too and chaulk it up to "learning experience", but if I can get about 2 years out of this tank, I'd be set...

Thoughts?

I would worry about the combination that you have going. voids in the seams and a really thin layer on the inside could spell disaster.

Honestly, I would be worried about the seams more so that the fill on the inside. The seams are what hold the tank together, but the inner seal does contribute.

I was afraid you'd say that... Its the only area with voids (about 4"), otherwise my seams between the glass panes are awesome. You don't think the brace will compensate? What about the slightly off construction?

Those voids are where the silicone has turned to J-E-L-L-O and if you shove new silicone in the and it infact adheres to the old silicone then you have a seem that is only as strong as the old silicone. You already know how strong that is...

Thats fresh silicone, I tore down the whole tank and sealed it, I believe the voids are from me pushing the panes together and letting them pull apart a little as it dried...

NIce you should have weighted the glass down and let sit for 3-5 days. Looks like you should redo it. theres alot less contact area than you should have so less strength.
