Barn Owl Care

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not sure on legalities. Can't buy feeders for fish, but if you've got a difficult feeder, you are going to have to use live so...
Yeah, with the pinkies, CO2 doesnt work as well, lucky they are so delicate a flick or dropping them on a hard surface will kill them instantly.

Hey jess, do you have a raptor rehab center near you? You could probably talk to someone there about your idea. I don't know the laws in the UK but maybe you could adopt and injured owl or something.

A friend of my father has 2 hawks and a very large aviry for both of them. One is a very old Red-tailed hawk and the other is a Harris Hawk. He used to hunt with them but I'm not sure if he still does. I know he lets them out everday to fly around and chase the geese off his property.

Good luck with your research!

Why don't you simply ask the breeder how they handle feedings?

Vicious_fish thanks alot for that mate, I'll try it if I can find one close!!! Really appreciated! I'll let yah know how it goes!
Santoury I have done that. But im not just sticking to one source of information.

Jessica - the way I look at it is, they are probably professionals who have been doing this for quite some time (Am I right?) They probably can give you much more accurate information than somebody who has never done this before, although I do see your want to get several opinions. It's just that a breeder is more likely to have accurate info. than, say, some books. The same is true for fish, that's for sure.

Yes and I understand that, which is why I asked them first. But BECAUSE I'm a novice I dont know if its right do i? We dont have the best animal keepers here in Liverpool I'm sad to say. I want to check as MUCH as possible before buying, thats why. Nothing wrong with that, I would say thats being a responible owner, would you not? :) :) :) :)

Kudos to you for doing this - I wish more people followed your example!!!

This may prove helpful?

I have worked with some wildlife rehabilitators, as well as people who have raptor licenses. They typically feed their birds frozen rodents. Anything else (like beef chunks) just does not have ALL the necessary "stuff" in it. (For example, bones and hair aid in digestion, etc.)
Here in the US you can buy bulk frozen rodents easily, and cheaply - I don't know about in the UK. But if you look on KINGSNAKE.COM you can look for their list of EVENTS, which will show you if there are any reptile shows in your area. If so, go to one, and get all the frozen food you want to stock up. I do not think there is a suitable alternative to rodents for Barn Owls. As you said, their primary food is voles, as well as mice. The ones I saw were eating a large rat every 2 to 4 days.

(Those were Great Horned owls and Redtail hawks)

Thanks alot, It's nice to see some aprreciates it! :)

As for the beef cuts, I'm glad you said that because I was told to feed the babies that and mice, though I will probably just give them beef cuts only as a treat, see, not all that bad asking advice is it ;)
