BARRACUDA OWNERS ACESTRORHYNCHUS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
About the only other thing i can add is a growth rate.

I received my yellow tails at 2.5'' and they grew to 6-7'' in 5 months.
So around 3/4''-1'' a month for the first 6 months.

And this was on a diet of live feeders only.

Thanks to everyone that has replied thus far

i got one red-tail barracuda in my 200 liters tank, he's around 12/13 cm;

no ammonia;

i'm tryin to give it not live food.. but it's hard.. really hard..sometimes doesen't eat for 3 weeks.

i got also an hydrolycus scomberoides as tankmate, he's around 10 cm;

water temperature is around 28 °C

anyone of us got some cuda?? just us??

I've kept reds and yellows and the yellows seemed to be the more docile of the two.I didnt do anything special for aclimation,float them for a few minutes and let them out.They were in the range of three inches when I got them and were kept in a sixty gallon tank with a temp.of 78 neutral ph.They were fed Rosey Reds and the reds got the most of them.

Acclamation--- This is when I have had major problems. So second time around, after i lost the first one, this is what i did.

Put stress coat in bag at fish store. Float in new tank to get a temp adjustment for 15 minutes. Add same amount of water from tank into bag (water is now double). After another half hour (45 minutes total) release. Before the big intro, i changed the water and double checked all levels, then added a serious dose of stress coat to the water. I had meds ready (marycyn 1 & 2, quick cure for ich). When things were perfect, I introduced him and he got ich immediately by the next morning. Quick cure took it right away and he has been chillin like a villain ever since. Hes gone from 3 inches to a strong 6 inches and he eats everyday.

Water parameters--- ph 6.8, nitrates 10, temp 78 F, Lots of oxygen.

Medications-- Marycyn 1 & 2 just in case of fin rot. Salt and heat plus quick cure for ich.

Tank Info-- 75 gallon LONG (he is super fast and makes it 5 foot in no time!). Short (height wise) long and wide tank with cover on one side and open area on the other for feeding. Planted with a little current. He likes to sit in the current.

Foods-- Self kept goldfish and minnows. I buy them and then they sit in quarantine. Any funny business they go down the toilet instead of in tank.

Problems-- ICH right away after introduction to tank. Easily cleared with quick cure. If you see one white spot treat the whole tank immediately and get rid of it right away! I lost my first one in three days to it.

Tank mates--- Hujeta, Schomberoid, angelfish, and surprisingly buenos aires tetras, spotted pleco. Not for long though because the tetras will be lunch when he gets bigger for sure adn hes growing fast.

Advice for new owners--- When you introduce them to the tank have meds ready! Instant problems but if you are prepared, you will have great results. Once acclimated mine is really easy to care for. Leave a little cover to one side and then lots of open area on top and to one side for feeding. At first mine was skiddish but now he doesnt like to be covered. He sits right in the current and right in the open in the middle of the water. He has places to go if he gets scared but he knows now I like him and i wont eat him. He is always front and center and when the hujeta and payara get scared, he just chills. My first one never made it through the ich stage because i tried the salt method and that just is not fast enough. If you see fin rot or ich (two most common things) treat right away with maricyn or quick cure. Do not wait because it will die quick. Once established they are bullet proof with clean water. I do water changes twice a week and he is doing great.

all heplful info. you would consider a scomb to be in the barracuda family, i think

fish- 5" silver arow.3.5"scomb.7"bala,2-3" gouramies.4"upsidedown cat,4" angel,2 cories

water 79deg, ph-7.0 nitrate less than 5 . d.o never less then 6.5

tank 125 6x18x2 eheim 2080 and emporor 400, uv sterilizer,planted co2 inj.

only had him a few days-so far so good. all the guppies are gone.12 total. ill get more today try to see how he is eating.

been doing 25-30% waterchanges a week.

quarantine tank getting setup asap. ill use tank water and filter should skip the cycle. i hope.

hopefully the uv sterizer will eliminate the need to use meds. we shall see.

scombs are in the hydrolycus family of species. (3)
hydrolycus scomb
hydrolycus Tatuaia
hydrolycus armatus

The barracuda family has 16 species

All of them are a ACESTRORHYNCHUS sp.

I have mostly seen small ones for sale in the stores but I did see a tempting red tail that looked to be close to twelve inches once.It had a nice gold sheen on its body but it had a good bit of damage to its snout which was probably due to the small display tank it was kept in.

I see more people posting about cuda's so I wanted to bring this old thread back.

If anyone has Aces and did not fill out this fourm I would appreciate it, I am trying to make it eayser for everyone that keeps/wants to keep barracuda. Some people have good luck and sone dont, so information from the people succeding will help everyone. Water pm's diet ect.

Perfect timing mine will be here this week. Acestrorhynchus falcirostris positive ID thanks to Hybridtheory. I will throw a post up when they arrive. However for now

Tank - 5' 115g 80x turnover
Temp - 86F
Tankmates - 3 3" C. orinocensis, 4 2-3"D. microlepis, 5 D. aequipinnatus, 2 H. nicaraguensis
Filtration - 2 hydro V sponge filters and 2 HOB full of Pothos
Food - quarantined guppies then start with prepared food training when fat and filled out.

I will post my updated results when I get them.

Thanks for a great thread, Josh

Ok nice thanks for the info, working out great. ^Good luck with everything ^, and anyone feel free to post up photos.

I would like a thread with a lot of information about our fin rot prone friends, a lot of people buy them and they seem to be hard to get over that first 10 day hump. As soom as my tank is good and cycled I will plant it and get some after about a month just to make sure the tank has a good bio set up.
