Basic Water Pump Q's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
prolly not. How much distance from the sump pump to the top of the tank. Prolly about 4'. That doesnt leave you with much flow. Depending on your overflow, i'd look for that rating at 4' head or however tall your setup is

Well I found another pump locally that seems good, If this isnt good for my tank I will probably just order one. This pump is a Mag 9.5 it flows 950 gph. After my water goes it 4-5 feet it should still flow at 500 gph right?

I found this link http://www.petmeister.com/item2605.htm

I found this chart for this pump, now I think it maybe too much for my tank

Head Height (in feet) Gallons per Hour
0' - 950
1' - 950
2' - 900
3' - 850
4' - 800
5' - 750
6' - 720
7' - 660
8' - 600
9' - 500
10' - 400
11' - 300
12' - 220
13' - 100
14' shutoff

Any thoughts on the Mag 9.5? The guy is selling it for 80, so maybe I'm just better off the 55$ whisper 4000

Huh? What? But Mom I don't want to go to school today.......Oh, Sorry.

More pump isn't a bad thing. You can always shunt (bypass) part of the water back to the filter and decrease the overflow accordingly.

At 750gph your turning your tank 6 time an hour that's not bad for a medium bio-load.

You'll loose a little with the PVC elbows & fitting.

Make sure that the plumbing and W/D can handle the volume plus some expansion (more fish).

Is dinner done yet Mom?

 Thanks Dr. Joe,

I was thinking about plumbing the water to where it would come out in two different places. I found the idea from someone else on the net, basically they plumbed there tank by running a PVC pipe up the middle and then had water come out of two different places
