bd/leo mix shedding what looks like slime coat...HELP!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just went and checked on her, and her breathing looks a bit more calm now, and she is swimming around more now...so could it have been the sds maybe nipping on the rays that cause her to flip out?
also added stress coat (i know prime is supposed to help w/ slime coat but...) and a bit more diluted salt in a pail of water to the pond ...

what do you guys think?
is this a life threatning thing or what?

A little salt will help with slime coat. But its best to find out why shedding of slime coat is occurring.

check for a piece of food decaying somewhere. i had it happen b4

whts the peat for? ph downer? why use it if u dont need it? just throwing stuff out there....

Im confused on the use of peat as well.

I would also do a water change again today to lower your nitrates. Prime is good for up to 48 hours, so don't add any more than you need for the water change today.

1) don't add peat, it may alter your water to softer...don't mess with water

2) nitrate of 40 ppm would not cause this but any test kit over 1 yr old is about as useful as a chocolate fireguard. Buy a new set of kits and test everything.

3) when in doubt do a 30-50% water change. Never do a change without dechlorinator.

Re-read point 1.

Like stated above 40 ppm nitrates isnt detrimental in the least. But I will debate old vs new test kits, just wont derail his thread with it. See my thread titled Old vs New Test Kits for my opinions. As Vamp stated look for decaying food some where. It could have just been a spike @ one point and now settled back down with the slime coat the end result. If it is eating just up the water changes and keep an eye on the ray. Its behavior will tell let you know if there is issues still.

i will be posting pics here in a few...so yesterday when I came home and checked on the pond she looked better...kept the lights off and left them alone. this morning I check on them, and upon closer inpection the other 2 rays seem to have bitten her back by her "feet" if you will...i'm running to hd right now to get egg crate to cut and seperate her from the others...
should I be doing wc today as well?
and I tried to feed everyone today, the others ate very little, and this girl didn't...
