beef heart

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pretty straight forward.
Pic 1 prep the heart. Cut away fat and tendons, then cut into slices (easiest if partly frozen)
Pic 2 Take the slices and freeze (I lay out on wax paper and then freeze so pieces are separate) then store in bag in freezer till needed
Pic 3 Time to feed, pull out frozen slice and cut into what ever size is appropriate for your fish (even my big guys like the strips around 2-3 inchs only)
Pic 4 dump in tank.

Cheers

ok hanks guys for the tips and thanks burbotman

No prob, just remember that it is important to trim off the fat. On step 3 I do a final trim of any fat before it goes in the tank. By no means should it be exclusively fed but rather part of a varied diet. (Just my experiance/opinion, backed by nothing other than experiance that my fish have done well with it part of their diet for many years)

There has been a lot of debate about feeding fish beef heart. Discus keepers seem to swear by it.

Personally, I think it is better to feed what the fish would get in nature: Small fish, insects etc.
I feed mine minced fish, bloodworm, minced prawn etc.

i wouldn't recommend beefheart for fish it will eventually cause fatty liver damage and shorten the fish's life quite considerably,i always fed my bichirs on shrimp/prawn,cockles,mussels,whitebait/lancefish etc and for extra protein i always use earthworms, which are far better than beefheart in mine and a lot of proffesionals opinions

If you are going to feed your fish beefheart, maybe you could serve it up with fries and a shake.

Contents of Beef heart, are quite different to the rest of a cow.
Beefheart is not the same as beef rump!

Japanese breeders (the best Bichir breeders in the world) swear by beef heart, as do most of us Bichir enthusiasts here.
Sure it's not healthy as a main staple, but is used to supplement a diet of other foods.

This extract might help:

"Beef heart is a muscle like other cuts of steak, but more dense with a higher nutrient content and additional protein.
Beef heart contains all essential amino acids, zinc, selenium and phosphorus.
It has more than double the elastin and collagen than other cuts of meat and a highly concentrated source of coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10."

My Beefheart comes prepared, with added vitamins.
I get mine from Grand Endlicheri Farm store. http://www.gef-endlicheri.com/html/top.html
Those of you that know GEF, will understand and trust their methods.
