:( why is it all the best fish are crap to house! what tank mates are good? if i have a predator, i want other predators, i dont want to mix them with veggie eaters and try getting the right foods to the right fish. thats why i wanted a species only tank :(

IMHO I would recommend if you're just going to keep one oscar, why don't you put it in a 75/90 or 125 gallon tank. Just that they are cheaper and more common out there. 180 would be fine for a small community of cichlids with the oscar being the centerpiece and smaller s/a cichlids like a festivums, severums along with some of the larger tetras / dither fish that are too large to become a snack.

i had one in my 180 and it was an ass hole to everything else so i got rid of it...i got three later on to put inthere and after one got stung by one of my stingrays...i had a pair...they were fine in the tank with no fighting...i got rid of them cause they started f'n with the rays...they kinda joined some other fish in the ray beating...so i got rid of them...now i hate oscars...they look ok, but are nonstop eatting machines that use space were you could have a much much more productive tank member...

*huge sigh* :( i just dont know what to do...

Go to www.tangledupincichlids.com and other cichlid shippers to find one extraordinary Oscar and enjoy him. No matter what you put in that tank, you'll be screwing yourself if you leave out the Oscar.

Oscar's are eating machines....4 will dang near eat you out of house and home! lol!

But they are still one of my favorite fish next to my Front's. I had one in a 55g when I first started into the hobby about ten years ago. He was like a puppy dog in water. If I did not go over to the tank and say hello when I got home, he would jump and make the tank lids slam until I went over and fed him and said hello. I ended up giving him to a fellow fishkeeper when he was about 8 inches because I realized I made a mistake and did not have the space to house him.

If I ever have a spare 100+ gallon tank, I will definitely be getting another pair of oscars!

I've found that, once mature, Oscars don't even eat 1/2 of what they eat while growing. I was feeding mine every other day for a long time. Now I just feed smaller amounts every day, but the results are the same. My nitrates at the end of this week were only around 9 ppm. How is that messy? ;)

imo i would keep like 8-10 oscars in a 6ftx2ft 180gal. i use less room to sleep on
but thats if i ever keep Os again

ive talked to my husband about it and we have decided to put in 5-6 small oscars and let them grow out a little, we will find new homes for some of them as they grow and keep our favourite 2 (or whichever 2 pair up) so we will have just a pair in there. we already have 2 small 4" youngsters and are hoping to pick up a few more over the weekend. i dont mind having just a pair in there and letting them enjoy the space. i dont want the whole tank given over to 1 foot long fish, it seems a waste, i guess 2 adults will fill the space and look good :) at what kind of size will they start to pair off?
