apistos and rams might be disappointing for a novice keeper, as they can be very sensitive, and die.

if you dont want to worry about fry, you can just get 1 con. it wont breed with itself. ;)

It won't breed with itself? it will try! A lone firemouth might work for a while and then you can see if she wants to go bigger

i doubt she would go bigger. she's going to be moving to atlanta soon in a small 1br apt. the 20g can prolly fit on a kitchen counter top or something.

i've thought about something else, like a little community, but to tell you the truth, she prolly isnt the most responsible person and leaving her incharge of something else prolly isnt good. she currently has a dog and ferret that shes always trying to pawn off on me or my parents lol

A pair of curviceps would also allow for a small school of neon tetras or something else colorful.

A pair of salvini's would fit nicely in there imo, and are very colorful and entertaining aswell :)

go CONVICTS

or get no cichlid and get whats in my sig :)

I was going to suggest cons as well. If not, you could always go for a school of white cloud minnows. In my experience with them they're extremely hardy.
