How about a pigmy geo ? Geo's are alot of fun to watch but probably not as hardy as a good old convict.

I would go convict , for sure they are entertaining fish, very hardy so a beginer should do great with them

For a beginner tank its not really a good idea cuz they are quite picky when it comes to water...

Personally I keep both cons and keyholes. I would also highly recommend keyholes as a first cichlid for any novice... great personality and disposition and would allow for other tank inhabitants. Cons can be just plain nasty.
