Im new to the site but really learned alot so far. I was planning on holding off on a tank for awhile til I could do more research, But I was recently offered a 135gal tank and stand for well below fair value from a friend. If I can get it into my apartment, he is going to help me get the sump hooked up and everything else set up. I want to have it running well for a week or two before stocking, to be safe.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a few beginner-friendly monster fish? I've had plenty of small community tanks but nothing quite so big, and I'd rather not just jump into a gar or ray or anything that requires a lot of experience.

Also, I don't know if it matters, but I have other pets (tank will be completely enclosed, nicer stand in that respect), so wondering how bigger fish will take to that? My bfs cat tends to be nosey.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Go for a Midas bro. Get a creamsicle one like this. You can even have a pair in a 135 gallon. But their personality really comes out when it's alone.

Your next choice would be a jaguar but honestly the Midas is my choice. Flowerhorns are cool too but they tend to get sick and die within the first 3 years.

So go for the creamsicle Midas! Haha

And oh yeah. Spend the extra $10 on the Midas. Don't get the Oscar, they are awesome fish don't get me wrong. They're common as dirt and the Midas out shines it by a long shot.

Iam not a big cichlid fan but I like the monsters. I would go with a flagtail prochilodus in a 135. Google golden shark which is a leptobarbus hoevinni and would also be cool in the 135. You could get these with 5 regular silver dollars and a pleco if you wanted to.

For none cichlids I would recommend a jardini. LOL I know in gonna get flamed for this. But keeping a single jar in a 135 isn't too bad in my opinion.

Yea a 135 for a fish that regularly tops out over 20 inches and isnt that flexible sounds right... Come on you cant be serious

bichirs would make great starter monsters. whether its the common senegal bichir, or one of the more rare such as the ornate bichir, they're pretty robust all around. they do require a carnivore diet, can be trained to eat pellets, and do very well with large meaty foods such as cuts of fish fillet, prawns, earthworms and possibly even live feeder fish. I have trained mine to eat out of my hand so there's also a nice level of interactivity.
