beginner ray!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the rays i have owned have never used their stingers on me or their tankmates. Even when my aro harrased them they never used it. I think they use it as a last resort in general. There are obv rays that will use their stingers more readily. Pictures everywhere on the net of impaled fish. Not too many ppl get stung. But there are dumb ppl out there and accidents dont happen. I never feared my rays but i never messed around with them either. Just be careful and it will be fine

I don't keep rays but did care for retics and motoros when I was working wholesale. Only time we ever had an employee get stung was when he was netting one and wasn't paying attention as much as he should have. Got him right up under his thumbnail--not a good day for him. ;)

I have three retics and don't know how it could be easier to keep a motoro.

Darius: please read the stickies for rays. If you can provide what the stickies say I would go with motoro as your first ray.

if you are in germany look for other german keepers and see what size tanks they have and someone mentioned buying domestic. This is the best bet as you know the fish is more used to the local tap in your area if there is none for sale put up a wanted add i have no insight on care because i have not owned any but im glad to see sombody else is making the lunge and my turtle is a red eared slider and 9 years old named elvis

what effects does suh a stimg have? the pics i saw on google look horrible. But i dont kow if thats representative? I could provide a 500 litre tank so far. And i would prefer a ray that was breed here in germany.

Try dhd24, meine Fischboerse, ebay kleinanzeigen and meine tierwelt if you're looking for german-bred rays :).

from what i understand the rays sting isnt far off from a bees and if you are allergic to bees you are liekly to react the same to a rays sting.... ive had my retics a few monthes now and find them a delight to own, maybe im just lucky but mine take both blackworms and chopped up nightcrawlers now and my female will beg for food when she sees me. i dont treat them anymore or less carefully then i would other larger predetory fish ( i also own a few gar, and an aba aba knife, and recently sold my fahaka puffer). you dont blindly stick your hand in the tank ... just use common sense... im more worried a visitor will do something dumb and get stung or bitten.

retics are picky and have to eat smaller foods. commen rays are like muts and mix breeds of lots of different types of rays. they dont look the best and might not have alot of markings but there cheeper. here like $60 were retics are normaly $75-90 and histrix are $125-150. Ive seen motoro rays around afew LPS for $100. but your tank your fish.
