benifits of plecos?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My pleco minimizes the growth of algae on the glass. Though they poop a lot, it is easier to siphon the poop than to scrub the glass. Since I've been keeping fish, I have never done scrubbing, except for the occasional removal of mineral deposits.

For me it is two fold. I haven't had to REALLY clean my glass since getting my Gibiceps. Good thing! However I do have to vac the gravel a lot more often now, because he does crap alot. I find it really fascinating though to watch him glide along the bottom of the tank just mowing everything up, and his coloring is absolutely beautiful.

Some plecos are wood eaters to help out thier digestive system and can eat your driftwood and the defecations can be disgusting. a good friend of mine has i think an orange tail (IDR scientific name) and the waste is aweful at time. mind you... gorgeous fish, just be ready to clean the bottom a lot.

I have a sailfin and phantom in together and they are very active. Far as cleaning idk but I never see any algae so I quess they have something to do with that. They poop alot!!! It's nothing a weekly cleaning can't handle!!

Over all it's more work to have them but they are very cool. The sailfin runs down on the phantom all the time, it's funny as hell!!!

I have a 3 inch sailfin pleco, don't get me wrong, he cleans like a hoover but craps like a elephant.

This guy is 13" and growing...the other one I have in this tank is a "common" and he is 11" and growing. the tank is 210g and is 7' long. The plecos have been known to trail a 7' turd like a tail!! What keeps it together I dont know!!:yuck::barf:

I keep 6 plecs (5 dif kinds, 3" - 15") in my tank. Lots of waste, but I vac twice a week. Love all the different kinds of plecs there are! :D No algae anywhere in my tank. :)

The only way to keep a tank clean is for the owner to clean it. The idea of the tank's occupants cleaning it themselves is a misconception.

:clap "I concur, well put!" :clap
