Bert is our 12" long Oscar,he has now jumped out of the tank 3 times if it wasn't for our dog barking to wake us up on each occasion Bert would be no more.He only does this in the middle of the night has anyone else experienced this or know why he is doing it?

are you sure his name is not willy

forgot to say welcome to mfk you will like it here

When I first started out I lost a couple oscars this way. You should put some kind of weight on the top of the tank to help avoid jump outs.

Get him a lid he can't pop through or wave goodbye. Many Oscars are career jumpers and will never stop. My own Oscar seems to see water dripping from the lid onto the surface, think it's a bug and lunge at it. But there are many things that could cause an Oscar to jump. Like a dog's face at 2:00 am.
All I do is put boulders onto the tank lids and seal the back with that plastic tracking that lids come with. So far, no jump-outs. Best of luck.

Are you sure there is no cause? Is your water healthy, tankmates suitable, etc.?

I already made 2 perspex sheets to go inside the tank under the lid to prevent him doing it after the first couple of times, but yesterday we changed our filter system to an FX5 and now the perspex doesn't fit at one end and Bert has found the only gap big enough to jump through and the lid. Does anyone know why they do this? thanks

Is there ammonia in your water? Is something scaring him? Sit and watch him for a long, long time and see if he gets angry at anything or changes color and sulks in certain areas of the tank. There are sooo many things that can spark an Oscar that it IS funny.

I like how you still refuse to tell us how tiny your tank is. I'm going to have to put my money on small tank size as reason for jumping if you won't admit it yourself.

People have given you several reasons why it might be doing this, you need to answer those questions or we can't help you anymore.

I don't think it was meant rudely, fishdude. Tone is hard to discern from text sometimes.

Bandit, he is right. We need to know a little more about your care of the fish before we can begin piecing things together.
