This is Ellie. I assume she is female as all the sites on bichirs I have found say small fins like hers mean female :/ We'll see ey? lol. However, I have been chatting about her on oscarfish.com (she lives with my oscar at the moment, waiting for the big tank to clear out) because she had a swollen belly (come to find out she's been eating her food and Pita the Oscar's food and just stuffed herself stupid) which led to the topic of what is she, and we can't decide. She really doesn't look like any of the pics I have seen online of the other bichirs. Anyone have any idea?

EllieID.jpg

this is all of Ellie. Pardon the dusty look to her, she's been digging up my plants and is covered in sand lol. She has large black spots on her back tail area and on her back bottom (anal) fins.

EllieIDHead.jpg

Close up of her head and front fins. (Isn't she cute?? :)

EllieIDTail2.jpg

Quite a pale pic of her tail.

I have more photos at http://www.geocities.com/thepaculady/EllieID.htm - can click them to make them bigger and so on. Didn't want to flood the post with millions of pics lol.

You can see her little back fins in this one: http://www.geocities.com/thepaculady/Ellie2.jpg

The swollen stomach has gone away by the way :P Here are some other shots of her (when her stomach was still swollen) http://www.geocities.com/thepaculady/Ellie.htm

Thanks everyone!!!

Welcome to MFK saphphx. I still think it's a lapradei.

Thanks :) I joined a while ago when I got landed with the Pacu, but found a Pacu forum later :D

Do you have any pics of a lapradei? all the google ones and so on that I can find look nothing like her as far as colouration.

This one on YouTube looks like her with less spots: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZySCJkUdM8

Guess they aren't always as dark as the ones in the pics I keep finding? All of the videos they have more then one bichir, would she be happier with a friend when she goes back to the large tank?

When I first got my lap it was quite pale also. But since I added some gravel and after a while they've colored up. Mine also had those black spots on the fins but not on the body.

that does look like her :) Thanks :) Is she going to need a friend then? I have a 200 gallon that she will be going into when the pacu shift it. Probably her, the oscar, 3 synodontis (sp?) Mr E (no idea what he is) and 3 pleco so far. Oh, and some giant danios if they live that long lol!
