I'm trying to grow plants in there, don't want them eating them, swords, val, anubias, and java fern.Have you tried a giant Peruvian apple snail? I’ve always wanted one but figure it would eat my swords.

They say the same about plecos and I’ve never had issues with that. I keep all the algae eaters well fed with fruit and veggies though so that may be why.I thought chinese algae eaters would when larger, such/attack large bodied fish like angelfish.
I don't really want snails, and I'm sure I have true SAEs, there is not a lot of algae in the tank, just some algae growing on the walls of the tank.I found Malaysian Trumpet snails were great at keeping everything clean. They do breed in freshwater so you may not care to have to many of them in your tank. I never minded them though.
I know you mentioned you have them, but I also found my Siamese Algae Eaters cleaned really well. Just check to make sure yours are indeed true SAEs.
What about panda garras?
Panda garra are said to eat BBA. I think mine do but I'm not 100% sure I have black beard algae. Cory of Aquarium Coop said several.in Michigan told him of panda garra eating black beard algae. If it is BBA, only SAE will do. If it is algae on the glass, bristle nose, panda garra, snail and any sucker mouth pleco will do. You can help by spraying with 3% peroxide on exposed surfaces during WC, and dose Seachem Excel after WC following recommended dosage.
