i agree with Matt S , its best to start with something easy like convicts or firemouths . convicts are simple males are just grey with black stripes and the female are similar to males but they have a orange or gold on their stomach they will breed in just about any size tank bigger then a 10 gallon . i've kept a pair in a 20 high for like a week when i first got them n they spawned a number of batches of fry that i used as feeder cause not many lfs are willing to buy convicts from breeds cause they spawn so easily. firemouths are good too. i have a pair about 3" in a 29 high rearing their fry , these are harder to sex best thing to do is get 4-10 juveniles at 1" or so let grow up and pair off , the good thing about them you can have more then one pair in the same tank cause they work as a community . its really your choice to make what to breed . study up one the type you intend to breed and get extra tanks for fry and other pairs. good luck.
