Best Canister Filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok, this is what I would do.
When buying a filter, buy one that will over filter the tank you want it for.
Then maybe even buy one that will work if you ever decided to upgrade to a larger tank.
I know you said 175.00 was your budget, but I would save another 40 bucks and get a Fx5
Quiet, can control the flow and great filer. I won 6 and love them.

Here is one one ebay. Cheapest on there, but can shop to see if you can find a better deal or ones with media bundle..

Or you can go to petland and buy a Fluval 305 filter for 100.00
My petland has them on sale at that price. Yours may also. If not, usually reg price is 140.00

Don't got Fluval 105-405 they used rib hosing (idiotic loss of flow). The plastic is not treated to survive temp swings and direct sun exposure for long(it warps/gets brittle). Sure they work and can work fine but an Ehiem or Rena will last years and are better thought out.

The FX5 is great as is the G-6 but do not waste your time with the other filters. Fluval designed them to be cheap to manufacture as their primary goal. With Fluval go big or go home.

MFK is FX5 crazed, as if there aren't any other good filters out there. I'm not saying it's a bad or not good filter, but for his budget there are other good/better options for him.

I have two emperor 400's and a marineland mag 350 cannister on my 65gal. Great filter combo IMO. A liitle more than 175 tho.

I don't think the tubing should put anyone off from buying a 105-405 model. You can replace the tubing with smooth tubing. I have done it and it works great.

Eheim 2217's can't even hear them running! I had some in my room and some xp3's it drove me nuts when a little air got into the xp3. It kept me up all night. The Eheim's I slept like a baby. I agree cleaing them is kinda of a pain but the quietness and reliability make them worth it
