Best Cat to go with a Motoro?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The cat I'm looking at is about 7" and my ray is about 6". I have to feed the same way right now as well. I stuff my Aro before anything can fall through to my ray. I don't mind that.

Certainly correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a LSN only get to about 18" max? That seems to be the consensus on the internet regarding their max adult size. Sure there will be exceptions, and some will outgrow this size, but I don't plan on power feeding him. I have a Raphael Cat in another tank but he is too small, and I'm looking more for the look of a RTC, LSN, TSN, etc. From what I've read or what I am finding out LSN seems to be the smallest of the "Big Cats".
Actually it is fairly common for them to get to around 24" (sometimes larger) if they live long enough. They tend to be very slow growers and often take 3-4 years just to get to 15-16", so I think that most of the time when lima's max out at 18" it is just because they died before they reached their full potential.

Thanks. May try a buy a fellow MFK'ers TSN for now.
You're going to need to go a lot bigger if you plan on getting a TSN. I'd recommend a Leiarius marmoratus (a.k.a. marble achara catfish) which gets to around 30" and doesn't take too long to reach a decent size.

once that TSN gets bigger, it will outcompete for food, unless your showering the tank with chunks of shrimp or w/e. and it will get too big for whatever tank you upgrade to if its not a pond. theres also the chance that it will be aggressive towards yours rays later on.

for the good looking choice, tigrinus, juerenese (sp?)(its been a while....), or some LSN's. thats what i suggested off the bat, and thats the consensus.

What do most of the seasoned raykeepers keep with thier rays? ;)

I know I've kept most of the cats mentioned aside from Tigs and Jurenese. There's only one kind I'd keep with my Marbles.

I am not overly seasoned, but I liked and had the same thought that the irwini would be a great choice. I am really worried that the ray and the cat will not do well together, esp if your going with a TSN I believe there are a number of threads here claiming that the catfish (usually RTC or TSN) turned the ray into a burrito for lunch.

If they're about the same size now (Motoro and TSN) and assuming feeding is the same (not power feeding either) will they grow at about the same rate? Or does the TSN grow faster? Or, if I get a smaller TSN or LSN will that eliminate aggression/competition for food with the ray?

I can look into the other cats mentioned, but LSN, TSN and RTC are so common both with other MFK'ers, LFS and Craigslist. Overall if it's just a bad idea to keep a cat with this ray than I'll forgo the whole idea. My ray takes priority at this point.

the point were still trying to make is that, the ray grows MUCH SLOWER than a TSN, and the TSN is just a bad bet. LSN is good! so is tigrinus and juerense. by the time your ray is a foot across, your TSN will be 2 feet long. a small pack of LSN or a tig would look great.

I agree and also a rtc is completely out of the question unless your planning a huge pond, and if your going to upgrade,id go bigger than a 6x3 footprint.
