Best catfish that don't get too big?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lima is your best best bet for shovelnose type cats tigs, tsn and jurenese get very large and would be too large for your tank. although they are the best looking in my opinon.

Ups, i forgot..

How about the Panaque types? They are ofcourse a totally different type.. but is it not a catfish... in a way?

I dont have a pic but i had a Checkered madtom for several months until my air conditioner died in my duplex and he passed away. Most Bullheads dont get over 20 inches and all madtoms are under 14 inches.

If you're going to end up with a 150, is this a standard or wide tank (wide is 5x2x2x)? A 2-foot catfish like a tigrinus shovelnose would really be too big for a standard 150 as its length is greater than the width of the tank. I'd look for something ranging in size from the jaguar catfish to the lima shovelnose that you're considering. I think a lima is a very good idea and you could put some of the milder species of cichlids with it like a severum, uaru, geophagus, etc. I'd avoid any breeding pair of cichilds in that tank though as they will take over most of a 150 gallon.

Just saying, a tig takes a bunch of time to get to 2'. Ive only seen 1-2 that are that size, and it takes a couple years to get that big if not more. In the time it takes to get that big, you could probably upgrade to a larger tank
