best cichlid community you ever had or still do

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah have been in the hobby for many years and just got sick of dead fish from the bruisers. I 'am also enjoying my 85 with geos and roseline sharks and a 12 inch L-114 pleco. IMO the big take no prisoner cichlid community tanks do not work out in the long run. It is the nature of the beast you can't just cram agressive cichlids in a glass box and expect them to get along contrary as to what nature wanted them to do.

Yeah its nice to take a break form watching my big boys and go chill out with the geo's.

Would be good to see pics of your tank bayarea couldn't seem to find in lounge? I wish I had a thousand sq ft of tank space to dedicate numerous spacious tanks. In the real world if you have a plan in place your water quality is good and no stress/ agression fair play. The American stocked tank by the russian looks epic and I to take inspiration from it.

How about picking fish that you can look after properly? Big cihlids dont mix well, nor do they like small tanks.

There are lots of dwarf cichlids if your ill equipped for monsters...

i have my videos in the central american cichlid media section, also king el tank has always disguisted me, also if a fish get hurt i put him in a qt and sell the fish thats hurt him, also in the future im hoping to use my 180 g to breed either beani or umbee, also bobba*** um the tank says best cichlid community that has ever worked for u and this community of mine currently works,

Currently...

Its shame that you see those tanks as anything but very short term solutions.

This is where many people get led astray. They see a post like yours stating it is a successful community because "it currently works" when in fact it is far from it. What it is is a tank full of babies that are a far from adults with many guaranteed dramas ahead. Not trying to dampen your spirits. Just telling it as it is. We all want as many species as possible and usually in the smallest of space requirements too but in reality, the bruisers need space. When you can keep that stock together for more than a few years with no casualties, growing your stock to adult size you may consider it somewhat a success. For the inexperienced though, it pays to take note of the ones that have had that setup for more than a few months. There are too many that claim success with immature stock only to never be heard of again. I think some make the mistake because they really can't fathom just how big some of these bruisers can get and just how much space they really do require. Give me a tank that is stocked on the lighter side with fish that are always in top condition than a tank stocked to the brim with most of its fish showing battle scars and ripped fins.

well im sorry to break up some serious issues but i would just like to say that this is the first thread iv starded where its nearly had a hundred posts.....woop woop....as for the overcrowding issue i dont really like to judge, i have seen some tanks that i never thought would work but have stood the test of time with all the fish looking great and healthy and some large tanks with very few residents and one rogue fish that has claimed the tank for itself. Nothing can be taken as gospel in this hobby because if we are honest we are all cramming large fish into a much smaller area than they would be in the wild and dont know how they will react. We all know the more space we give them, the better the chance of reducing aggression but its not always the case. I personally like to grow my stock together (when it is possible) in as large a tank as i can with the intended residents that i plan to have in there for life. Some people like to get quite a few fish and wittle them down but its not for me as i would get attatched and end up in a situation. I think this is the route that bayarea is trying to explain he is going down and has mentioned he is going to thin down his stock, iv not heard him say he plans to house all them fish in his 180g for life but i agree with greenterra when he says its misleading to say this stock is working when they are juvenile and it is without doubt that if that stock was kept in that tank for life it would end in a bloodbath but that is from what i have read not the intended idea. I would suggest thinning out the stock sooner rather than later to minimise casualties but its your tank and you see it everyday and therefor in a better position to judge aggression than i am. Good luck with your tank and im sure your upgrade will bring you lots of enjoyment. Moving on, Greenterra what is the stock in your tank now? they are some real beasts

k i understand u guys but the thing is all of these are future stunning fish thas why i am only keeping the best looking in a 96x244x30, also i am growing some out to breed in the future, like i am going to breed the beani in a seperate tank, i am going to take the festae to a seperate tank ,, but for now its hard to get rid of a fish because they are so small with no color so im await till at least 5 inches big to start seperating them for breeding projects and other thing, also if u do some browsing there are some seriously overstocked tanks on mfk that people love but i hate, have u guys ever had a growout tank to just grow fish out, because that is what im doing, would u rather i sell my 180 to buy a bunch of 90 gallon grow out tanks or jsut throw them in the 180 as a huge growout tank

also mshill90 i read your threads and it seems you have fish die on you i have never had a fish die or kill each other, except for my jags but that was after they breed, also my african arow died because it was skinny from the lfs

Let's see here.. my fish that have died..

Malawi Hawk Fish- Killed by RT
Mahseer- Killed by RT
Tig- died from shipping
Ray- died from ammonia from shipping

Uhm.... I have over 30 tanks buddy, and when there is an issue, I treat it asap, and majority of the time it's fixed. Things happen.

So, before you start pointing fingers, get your facts straight. This is not a pissing contest, and I refuse to let you talk down to me. I have far more experience that you my friend, and I don't care if your tanks are grow outs or not.. the fact is, you don't have this super big tank that you keep claiming you are "going to get" so, until you own it, it's nothing more than talk.

You want to own every fish you want, possible or not, and you don't care about how they are being kept.

Even fry will kill eachother off.

You will learn your lesson, and then we will all be able to say "I told you so".

so are you saying i choose the wrong path , also when you say surprised if i have many left to move r u saying that my fish are going to die becaus e, then you ar ewrong becaus ei have some of the healthiiest fish , and also the water quality in my tanks is superb, and if u dont htink i care for my fish then your wrong because i sacrifice alot of the space in my small room for these fish , all the space i have left is for my bed which is a sofa couch to save space and my tv, and cramped computer desk because i care if my fish get a big home and are happy,

I forgot to ask.. how old are you?

If I remember correctly.. you are not even 18..

So yeah, good luck buying that big tank kiddo.

well for the record i bought all my tanks and fish by myself with no help , also i am in the bay area california i see monster tanks for like $200 for a 300 gallon, so i can afford it
