It's an 18" wide tank? I would put anything that gets too far over 12" in for life personally.

+1 I wouldn't go with Trimacs chancho, or hatiensis personally. Umber, dovii, and peacock bass get way too large defiantly a no on those. I would look at the slightly smaller amphs like Midas or hogoborum. Cubans would work as well as grammodes.

I say you push aside this whole "Central/South American Cichlid" idea and just get 25-30 Clown Loaches

if you get a grammodes you will want to find large male. They grow very slow. Ive had mone about 4 months and they have grown maybe 1/2 inch
