Best cichlid for a 150?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OK CK can work as they average around 18 inches but thats still pushing it as they arent as flexible. The fire eel or certain lungfish would be fine in a 150, but like it was said before the OP wants cichlids not oddballs. I think any fish from the parachromis species minus the dovii would be awesome

From what ive read, female umbees, and dovii would be ok in a 150 because they usually only hit 12-14 inches for the female umbee and 16 inches for the dovii female

I believe a male umbee would work for quite some time as they are slow growing same as dovii but you would have to plan ahead for a bigger tank in the future if an umbee is what you really want. I think it takes them 4 years to reach full grown size so Id say in the 2nd or 3rd year you would want to start looking for a bigger tank! if you plan to upgrade and can go a bit larger you could be able to keep a pair in the 150 for the time then look at something 200+. I am no expert on umbees but figure they are the same as dovii in some sense :)

I'd love to get an Umbee, they are so nice looking, but unfortunately I'm not going to be able to get anything bigger than my 150 for quite a while. My house just isn't big enough lol. I'm not sure when we will be moving so I'd rather not get a fish that has the potential to outgrow the tank I already have ya know?

There are a few alternatives that you could look at instead of the umbee or dovii. Instead of the dovii you could look at grammodes( look like a cousin of the dovii and just as nasty) You could also look at Caquetaia kraussi or myersi, there are in the same family stay much smaller but i hear they have alot of personality and attitude

I like the Caquetaia myersi. Thanks!

Loisellei are a blast to keep and are really nice looking I had a thick 7" male that was personable and aggressive. They also grow fairly quick.

Ide go with a loisellei group of 6 and keep the ones that pair up.

Or

How about a group of red tiger motaguense? I have a huge 10" male that looks like a tank and a female that's redder than any festae females I've owned.

I'm currently growing a pair of loisellei "Panama" right now :D
