what about a 2217 and this thing its like a clip on(module) to make it better http://www.animal-house.co.uk/acatalog/filtration_external_eheim_classic.html

Interesting add-on ... but worthless. It's not the media capacity that limits the 2217, it's the pump.

The call is yours, but consider
  • the value of your fish
  • the money you spend on other gizmos
  • the long life of an Eheim (10+ years)

You get what you pay for... and if you get a good filter now, then you won't have to worry about having to upgrade filtration later.

ok i have thought about it for a couple of days and i plan to get a fx5 for the 120 tank......if i this is not good enough or i cannot get hold of it iam going to florida in less than a week so i could pick a filter there which isnt in the uk...how much is the ac110?

Davidefc, for what it's worth I just setup a 120 a couple of months ago. Right now it has 2 XP3's running on it. It has great circulation and the fish waste that is too heavy to get sucked up into the filter intakes rests underneath them, making clean up easier.

Secondly they are both pretty quiet. You can tell that they are on, but no more loud than say a cooling fan on a laptop or computer. Right now I have 4 JDs at 3", 2 GTs at 5", a few Giant Danios, 2 6" Hujetas, a Gold Nugget, a Senegal, and a Delhezi. I will be taking the male JDs out as they mature(breeding project), and plan on throwing an AC110 in a couple of months.

Overall I rate the 2 XP3's as very adequate for a 120 without being overstocked.
