This tank will be somewhat like a grow out/quarentine tank. Just for peace of mind I would like an overkill filter for it as it may quarantine a ray pup or two. Of coarse will cycle the tank with everything from the tank I already have. Im only familiar with aqua clear filters as well as some canister filters. I was thinking of jumping with an aqua clear 110 on it for $80 for the ease of maintenance and I have experience with them and know they are very reliable. However if there is a canister filter with similar price as well as effectiveness please tell. I plan on ordering a filter tomorrow off amazon.

Or do you think two aqua clears of smaller size would be more efficient with individual media...

id run dual aq70s.. that will put you at 15x turnover rate and also u can alternate cleanings so u never have a mini cycle. thats what i ran on my 40b

and i was typing this before you edited your post to say dual filters :P

Lol guess great minds think a like. I was thinking that too, did you put the same media in each or did you change it up. I feel like carbon isn't needed unless chemicals needs to be removed. So I was thinking of just filling it with pond matrix as well as the regular sponges it comes with...unless there are better ideas?

If there was away I can enhance the mechanical filtration would be great as if i remember often the bio media would be covered in waste...

I think i would still need to put some sort of biomedia in....maybe if I do do dual aqua clears with double stack of sponges I could look through some stuff and maybe might find the 20 gallon size and fill that with just biomedia.... I don't know eighteen looks like this tank will be way overkill...which is a good thing lol

All you need is a ac 70 with one sponge and bio max media. I ran my 40b on one ac 70 with out any problems. If you really want to overkill it go with two 70 or one 110 with a sponge and all the bio max you can fit in it.

I like mixing a penguin/emperor for bio and the AC for mechanical myself.
