People still use undergravel filters? They still make them or do you have to buy them off ebay?
Yup, if I hadn't seen the big sign at my petco "All Under Gravel Filters, 10% off" I would have thought the same. They are still in production and the only person I have ever met that has ever liked them is tcarswell over here.

Get an AC110.. and you can use sand with it just fine. Get pool filter sand, its usually heavier and does not get stirred up at all. I have a 75G and a 20G with AC's on them and sand, never had any problems.

You must be living under a rock kiddo. Ask Chompers or the guy that stood up for me. They work. And I don't appreciate your disrespect. Say that to my face damn E-thugs The older crowd used them for years and they are still effective and you cannot beat them for the price. Open your eyes

"Honestly, have you really owned one? I think you are giving "monkey say monkey do" advise. It seems that from the posts that follow this one that you don't really have experience with UGF's or RUGF's and are only repeating what you have heard. If that is the case, you really owe it to the OP (or any OP for that matter) to inform him that your advise is conjecture and is not based on actual experience.

For what it is worth, all three statements above are false. Cleaning and maintenance is done with a gravel vac. If you have gravel you will have to vac it reguardless if it has UGF plates or not. The plates will not change the 'how', 'when', or 'why' of gravel vac-ing and it will not change the difficulty or frequency. What it will change is the ability of the gravel to participate in the nitrogen cycle and it will also prevent the gravel from sulfating."

A quote from Chompers. Now prove chompers wrong. God I cant believe you people

I am sorry, I did not mean to come off as rude (or as an e-thug! which is a new term to me... i like it). I was just stating my opinion, and I said that in my original post. I really did not mean to come off like [i guess] I did, and i am sorry about that.

You cannot argue the fact that they rely on a level gravel bed, and cichlids make that nearly impossible. Also, it is a fact that I have never met anyone, minus yourself, who has liked them.

I do not really see where I disrespected you, but I am sorry about that too... Like I said, everything on any online forum is merely opinion and should be treated like so. You got quite defensive and said that I undermaintaned my old UGF when I went against them, and I did not really care all that much...

Oh, and I hate being called a kiddo, please refrain from doing so in the future... I just (for some unknown reason) realllllllly hate that word.

For one, I am person, not people. And for 2, although you gravel vac just as much and the same way, a lot of the waste is difficult to remove from under the plates without an EXCEPTIONALLY strong vac. Normal maintenance such as gravel vacuuming (even if monthly, which I do not suggest) will prevent the gravel from sulfating.

I have owned a UGF and did for a while, long enough for me to realize that they are inferior to most other forms of filtration.

Fair enough. Mean while you wait until I pull out the big guns to apologize. :D And my malawi's leave the gravel alone so far. Plus I got plenty of gravel in there 1 and a half inches so very little detritus makes it under the plates and if it does you know what I do? I pop off a cap and suck it all out I have had my UGF for 6 months and it has not found anything under the plates. Same as with my old tanks that ran UGF for years. And I do use a high powered vacuum. So UGF work well for me. Maybe not everyone but they work for me and have proven since before either one of us were born

PS Do your self a favor and read that entire thread I linked.

No disrespect intended talking online makes it easy to seem offensive and I assure you that was not my intentions.
For the personal attacks im sorry. For the experience attacks.. ehh not so much :)

I went to a petstore today, the ac110 was $90 and the ac70s beside it were for $54. All the cannisters big enought were for over $200. Maybe this was just one petstore that had prices like this, but I doubt it.
Sounds about right. AC110 used to be very cheap. like 43 dollars. But because of popularity they jacked the price up. Still an awesome filter though:headbang2
