Best Filtration for my African Tank.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You must be thinking of the Rena XP4 and XP3. The FX5 is the huge Fluval monster. The next step down is the 405. I don't like the design of the Renas as well but they are cheaper. Multi filters are usually better from a maintance and safety standpoint. Any single filter, no mater how high quality can break down and your left with nothing...

Ok thankyou, I dont know what I was typing. I'll do a little more research tonight.

I would go with the Fluval 405, and your emp 400. My fluval 305 is 8ft. away and I cant even hear it, granted its inside my cabinet in my stand. Personally I would get some extra bio rings and put them in the emperor's extra media tray.

Just pick up a pair of super cartrages for the E400. They not only improvce bio filtration they eliminate the need to keep buying pads.

Wolf I'm guessing those are for bio filtration, but can u keep the mechanical on there too at the same time, and do they make one to fit the emperor 350?

Not just for bio....no. They have two cleanable mechanical filtration pads in each cartrage. The Emporers are the 400 and 280 twin pump filters with the spray bar driven bio-wheels. The 350 is a penguin...but yes they make them from the penguin 350 and even for the wispers...in fact they turn the wispers and top fins into an acceptable HOB filter.

Where can I purchase those cartridges online? I could not find them at thatfishplace.com or big als.

Check with E bay...I pick them up bulk every now and then from a couple of differant vendors.

I have 8 fairly large fish and a few smaller ones in a 150 gallon tank with a single E400...a single Fluval 405 and a pair of hydro5 sponge filters. I reserve the FX5's for 240's and above. IMO any 125 that actully NEEDS a pair of FX5's is grossly overstocked. As it is Im about to move a few of the fish out of the 150 in the intrests of safety.

VERY high stocking levels can be maintainable but don't allow you any lee-way in case of a power failure. A single 3 hour outage can wipe out an entire tank.
