Best fish for a 55?

midas, pure bred or "other" can hit 15-16" hardly suitable for 55's.

I said midas, OR RD, I haven't seen many midas over the 1' mark...only wild caught ones and the only person i've seen with wild caught midas is Jeff Rapps.
Edit: In fact he has a bunch of wild caught and captive raised right now for some good prices.

I've seen a Paratalapia Bleekeri in a 15 or 20 gallon.. full grown male.. was happy. I think sometimes too much is made of tank size. I'd go for the festae too though!

salvini, jack dempsey, green terror, convict, buffalohead all would be much happier in a 75 gallon when they get bigger.

Any the above listed, would be happier in a 75g yes, but would do fine in a 55g.

do the festae or you could do some HRP's and i don't care what most people here say most of the fish stated above can survive perfectly fine in a 55 especially because they are alone and nothing else that is large in the tank...so don't listen to them if its solo its fine aslong as it doesn't get longer than 12 inches or so.

This would be your veiw, since all you can have is a 55g, right? RD, midas, some texas cichlids and trimacs all get too big for 55g tanks. A male festae is a no, female maybe, but IMO no.

How exactly would you be able to tell if the fish was happy? Only a complete moron would keep a 10" fish in a 15 or 20g tank

i would go with a true green terror, they don't get much over 6 inches and rapps has them right now
