Best fittings for 55g drum

Totally agree, I've never had to put a bulkhead on a curved surface, not sure how well they would seal.
And at just over $3 for a 1.5", you cant get much cheaper than that.

Might have to try them out sometime. Plastic drums or totes, as in this instance, just flatten out where the bulkhead attaches. For non flexible surfaces though, this should work great.

As long as the bulkhead is sealed right it will hold on a curved surface. I made this canister filter with just the elbow fitting and one rubber gasket. And no bolt on the inside. When filled it never leaked out the bulkhead the bottom broke before the bulkhead leaked.

"Uni-seals" far superior to bulkheads on round surfaces and where bulkheads dont fit. Just look up "uni-seal" on google. They are alao sold at aquatic eco.

After doing some googling. I agree uni-seal is the way to go.

Are you sure it's black PVC and not Black ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene)? Most hardware stores will have Black ABS pipe and white PVC. Black PVC is not as common, but it exists.

There is a lot of debate about whether or not ABS is fish safe. IMO, it is. Most standard bulkheads are made of ABS. So are Legos.

But to answer your question, the difference between black pvc and white pvc is color.*

*Although sometimes color can be used to differentiate the wall thickness of pipe. For example, schedule 80 PVC usually comes in a dark grey color, whereas schedule 40 PVC is usually white.

Hope that helps.
