I find the exact opposite to be true about Gmail while it does combine emails from one sender (in the same set of exchanges) it catalogs well and is easy to go through. It is by far the best email service in my opinion.
We found it hard to find a certain comment(s)/attachment(s) when multiple people/users are involved(there were 5 people sending emails every few minutes with 10-15 emails in less then 20 minutes)

I could see the difficulty there, I imagine there are options to change the way that happens and catalogs.

I would never pay for email. With that said, I use Windows Live. I really like it. It's easy on the eyes, and provides a lot of space, along with other great features. My second choice would be Gmail.

Yeah, I have been thinking that it was quite a waste of money. It was only $5/month and so I was being lazy.... Of course, it used to be free with my service, I wouldn't have paid for just email.

I have just about finished switching everything to Gmail and I'm going to cancel my Earthlink account this weekend.
