Best gun for home defense?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All we have to use is ball. We can't use hollowpoints. I will admit this affects my opinion very strongly.

I didn't teach a 'firearms class', I was a drill sergeant. I also have over 6,000 hours of range time plus practical experience. I taught the doctrine that my superiors told me to teach, and it is backed up with available data. Don't like military doctrine? I could care less, it works. The fact that 9mm is an ineffective killer is why we teach soldiers to shoot the enemy twice in the chest and once in the head, as I alluded to in my other post.

I also didn't advocate the use of 9mm ball for anything. I am a fan of .45 ball ammo, a proven man stopper. I did say that 9mm ball was a terrible round that doesn't kill effectively.

Please elaborate upon what 'mistakes' I have made and what data or experience you have to refute them. That isn't a dick statement, I would like to see your perspective as opposed to my experience and training. Does proper shot placement not make sense? Does practice not make sense? Do you refute the fact that an attacker nearly always breaks off an attack if they know their victim is armed? Do you refute the efficacy of a head shot? Am I not entitled to an opinion that differs from yours?

Also, I really can't understand your hangup on the over penetration. Any round has the risk of over penetrating, and taking any shot with any round without a clear line of fire is very foolish indeed.

I strongly suspect any discussions you and I will have will be like a Ford and Chevy person trying to convince each other that their truck is better. There is data to support both ideas, but at the end of the day shot placement and practice makes more of a difference than the type of round you use. I've already stated in previous posts that I have no problem with a quality JHP. I use JHP in all of my hunting rounds. I understand the point of it. My wife will carry it in her 9mm. However if you can present to me a good reason why putting a 230 grain .45 ball round into someone's head isn't a good stopper and technique, I'll certainly consider it. I'm not that stuck in my ways, I just use that which I am familiar with.

I never said those things werent important. In fact those are very important.

Your active military, that explains alot. Just because ur limited by the hague convention doesnt make your ammo good. 45 ball is also ineffective(you leave a .225 diameter hole and actually penetrate within an 1" of 9mm ball). Any ball is less effective than a quality hollow point. The reason im hung up on over penetration is because here.in the actual US regarding HD or CC, over penetration is something one.must concern themselves with. At war, who cares. Here where a bullet exiting your assailant could strike little suzy in the head, its a issue one must concern themselves with.

9mm is actually very effective with the right ammo. Some loads surpass the legendary 357mag load. 9mm ball is ineffective. As is all ball ammo from pistols.

I will not refute that attackers break off when they know the victim is armed but this is where you are twisting ur statements. You said it was a fact that most assailants break off an attack when shot. This is simply not true, esp if you add in PCP or the like into things.

You are evaluating things from a military standpoint which is all well and good. In a HD setting, its a different ball game. You dont tell(and most experts agree here) a person learning to defend themselves to aim for the head. This increases the chance of missing. You teach them to aim for center mass.

This is where we differ. You are hung up on military tactics and military ammo. We as civilians(except in crap holes like NJ) are not limited to using ineffective ammo, nor do we have the luxury of not worrying about over penetration.

I would like to point out that over penetration sounds better than no or very little penetration. That said, I know very little about guns.

Hello; Perhaps the larger concern with regard to self defense is the possibility that a bullet that can go thru walls, car doors and even the person who may be attacking you is that bullet may injure or kill an innocent bystander. I believe that under the law if you fire a round that harms a bystander, you can and likely will be prosecuted.

I think the thrid link in my previous post addresses this a bit.

Would holding the gun sideways increase the velocity of the bullet? A recent academic article written in the University Book of Physics indicates that a sideways tilt can increase velocity.

I have not heard of that study and I doubt holding the gun in such a way would do much for accuracy....

Those were some great articles; definitely a good read for anyone that's looking to get a firearm for home defense.

Yes they where. Of course one is a wiki, lol.

They also ignored alot of rounds in the last article. Was actually very supprising how many they skipped over. Some I understand(my prefered load, Ranger Bonded 130-gr. .38 Special +P is LEO only) but some (underwood, swampfox(rip dude) leigh defence), I dont.
