best hang on filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My experience is this: AC for me is the best hob I have owned. The current emperors are too damn loud, the penguins work well, but neither of these 2 can match the AC for flexability. Yes they are expensive, but they last a very long time.

Aquaclear. Ive had the emperor and penguin, they are a pain to clean and maintain compared to the AC. The simplicity of the AC is why its so popular, the best hang on filter IMHO

Some of the emperor series did go out with loud ass impellers, but that was an accident, and Marineland will replace for free if you call them. 2 of mine had to be replaced, and they are quiet now. I use the emperor without the extra media basket in, and have pothos growing in the extra space. Works like a champ.

A lot of people like AC, because it's cheap to run on reusable foam. To me, cleaning the gunk off the filthy foam is a pain, and the coarse texture of the foam does not provide good mechanical filtration. My preference is Penguin, simple design and cheapest HOBs in the market, and the thinner box design takes up less space behind the tank. Penquin provides more effective mechanical filtration using fine texture filter pads and changing the pads is a no pain 2-minute task. No, I don't buy expensive pads from the manufacturer. I buy very cheap polyester batting from fabric shop and cut my own pads at less than 10 cents per pair. I operate the Penquin straightly for mechanical and don't use the biowheels as they will slow down the flow. For the same reason, I prefer Penquin over its more complicated Emperor line as I don't care for the jet stream and biowheels.

I have marineland and aqua clear and ac wins. First things first, you don't have to buy replacement filter pads for ac. It is durable and easy to clean. All the parts are simple and put together with ease. Aqua clear is a bit quieter too. There is also a little more easy with adding media imo opinion since u r stacking it compared to putting it into slots. Also some have had issues with the bio wheels on emperors getting stuck which could cause some issues in water quality. Although this shouldn't happen if you maintain your filter well. Overall, ac gets my vote.

Btw: if the ac pad is too coarse (which I can agree in certain situations) you can simply buy finer generic pad from ur lfs cut to shape and add on top of the existing pad. Easy modification.
